The Padres had a well deserved off day last night before coming home to take on the Diamondbacks. Tonight is the beer fest game, then you have your standard Saturday and Sunday games following that. So there are plenty of fun times to be had this weekend downtown at Petco park. I have a feeling that this team can beat up on the Diamondbacks and win yet another series. In fact, I know they have the chops to even pull off a sweep and push the DBacks deeper into the standings and spoil their playoff hopes. In fact if we do sweep them then we will be just a game behind the DBacks in the standings, which means oh so close to 3rd place. Here are your Padres links for today:

Fast risers mark Padres' new top 20 prospects list - Padres.com

A day in the baseball life of Bud Black - Union Tribune
"Black is not an authoritarian manager. He empowers his coaching staff. His style is based partially on his personality and partially from observing the managers he played for and served under as a coach. He’s much bigger on individual interaction with his players than team meetings."

Cashner will be in rotation, Bass won't - CBS Sports
"Right-hander Andrew Cashner returns to the Padres' rotation Friday night against Arizona at Petco Park, but manager Bud Black said Anthony Bass might remain in the bullpen for the rest of the season."

Tom Layne emerges from Padres bullpen - Fangraphs
"Following a one-out save Wednesday night, Layne sits with a 1.74 ERA and a 17-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his first 10.1 major league innings."

MadFriars interviews Justin Hancock
"Justin Hancock, 21, was drafted in the ninth round of the 2011 draft by the San Diego out of Lincoln Trail Junior College. He gave up a scholarship to Indiana State University to sign with the Padres in one of the many over the slot deals then scouting director Jason McLeod made that year."

Chicken Friars has thoughts on Chris Denorfia's extension
"I for one tip my cap to the Front Office for making this move, so today I thought that I would share my thoughts on the extension, and why the decision to bring Denorfia back will ultimately benefit the ball-club."

Gaslamp Ball previews the DBacks series
"Are you getting tired of it yet? I'm calling for the sweep. It's been nice actually having the confidence to believe the Padres can pull off these sweeps."

Tom Layne Emerges From Padres Bullpen

Tom Layne‘s major league career is just 157 pitches old. Typically, this is not great news for a 27-year-old. Layne, however, has put together an exemplary 157 pitches to open his time in the big leagues. Following a one-out save Wednesday night, Layne sits with a 1.74 ERA and a 17-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his first 10.1 major league innings. Even Layne’s two runs allowed...

Padres' Denorfia accepts two-year contract extension

Right fielder Chris Denorfia on Wednesday became the sixth San Diego Padre to get a contract extension this season. Liking the "niche" he has found with the Padres, Denorfia accepted a two-season extension that will pay him $2 million in 2013 and $2.25 million in 2014. The 32-year-old outfielder made $1.165 million this season. "It's a great day for me and...

D-backs come close, can't end Padres hex

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chase Headley drove in four runs on two home runs, including a solo shot leading off the eighth inning that lifted the San Diego Padres to their seventh straight victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-5 on Friday night. Coming off a hot August in which he had 10 homers and 31 RBIs to win NL Player of the Month honors, Headley extended his career highs to 26...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 9-5-12

It was a good day for the entire Padres organization; while the Friars were busy winning a series against LA, both their minor league affiliates that qualified for playoff spots- Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne- managed to collect a victory in their first playoff game. Lake Elsinore won off the strength of a dominant pitching performance from Matthew Andriese and a clutch single by...

Every year on my birthday I wish for one thing: a Padres win. This year is no different, but the Padres are off today so I can't really get that wish on the day of. However, they did take the series from the Dodgers last night so I take that as an early birthday present from the team that I have literally loved since birth. Story time: On the night that I was born, the game was...

Tom Layne and Release Points

You know the saying — “It’s not about the size of the boat’s engine, it’s about the motion of the ocean.” Pretty sure that’s it. The point is, despite the strong correlation between fastball velocity and strikeout rate, there are plenty of pitchers that make less gas work by varying speeds, varying location, and varying movement. Jack Moore did an excellent job of...

The TinCaps win game 2 and advance in the playoffs due to the hot bat of Travis Jankowski- who owns a 19 game hit streak- and a powerful display by Lee Orr. Their bullpen was also stellar for the 2nd night in a row as they throw over 5 scoreless innings. The Storm were not as successful as their offense had issues with the JetHawks for the 2nd night in a row. The Storm only have...

Miley tries to end D-backs streak vs. Padres

Chase Headley is doing a lot of damage at the plate recently. He's also hurting the Arizona Diamondbacks' playoff chances. The Diamondbacks will try to snap a seven-game skid against the Padres on Saturday night when the teams continue their three-game series at Petco Park. While Arizona has significant ground to make up in both the NL West and wild-card race, it created...

The loss kept the Dodgers 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Giants in the NL West, with a pivotal three-game series between...

Chase Headley is the savior of this team. I know I'm stating obvious facts here, but he is just on a tear right now in the latter half of the season. After the game last night the post game show was talking about his numbers from all of August compared to his numbers in the first 6 games of September. His September is on pace to be even better than his August, which he won the...
