Daniel Murphy has had his ups and downs at the plate this season for the New York Mets, but the second basemen has been reliable when it counts.  The 27-year-old proved once again last night that when the pressure is on, he’s at his best.

With the bases full of Mets in the home half of the 9th, #28 stepped to the plate and drilled a 1-2 fastball off the foot of Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon to drive home the game-tying run.   Murphy finished the contest 2-for-5 and has now collected a hit in eight straight starts, hitting .457 (16-for-35) over that stretch.  What’s most impressive about Murph is that he is getting the job done when the team needs him most, with runner in scoring position.

We joked most of last year that the phrase ‘RISP’ meant ‘runners in stranded position’ when it came to the Mets, but this year the team (and especially Murphy) has turned things around.  While the Mets second basemen is batting just .242 with the bases empty, he rises to the occasion with men on base and especially with RISP, where he boasts a robust .353 avg, good for 7th best in the NL among players with 40+ at-bats.  Take it one step further and toss in the pressure of their being 2 outs and RISP and Murphy steps things up another notch, raising his average to a cool .400.

The Mets as a team have crushed with two outs and last night their five two-out runs scored improved their MLB best total to 184 in the category.  In fact, when you look at the NL leaders in that category it’s heavily represented by the blue and orange, with David Wright‘s .424 average leading the league and both Daniel Murphy and Lucas Duda falling in line behind #5.

While Murphy finished the series against Philly batting .500 (7-14), I’m sure he’ll have no problem welcoming the Cubs into town tonight as the lefty bashed Chicago pitching for two home runs and four RBI the last time the teams met at Wrigley.  With Johan on the mound tonight, a little of that offensive firepower would be a welcomed sight as the Mets look to win their 7th game in their last nine contests.

Tejada Proving To Be A Core Player For The Mets

I’m marveled at the incredible season we are seeing from our starting shortstop Ruben Tejada. Who could have expected such poise and confidence in someone so young and in fact younger than most of our top prospects who are still toiling in the minors. When the Mets let Jose Reyes go this Winter and announced that 22-year old Tejada would be the everyday shortstop and that...

The 2012 Mets: What Can We Expect In The Second Half?

The first half ended with a bang, the second began with a whimper. In game #81, attended by a Citi Field record 42,516 souls – of which I was one – that rare bird, a Met laugher, the Mets became a 44-37 team. As Jonathon Niese set down Phillie after Phillie, as Daniel Murphy flirted with history, as David Wright repeatedly broke Shane Victorino’s heart and this one was...

Ruben: He’s Not Just a Sandwich. He’s Our Shortstop

Ruben Tejada has been fantastic at the top of the Mets lineup. Let’s hop in our blue and orange Delorean and type in the date Dec 4 2011.  Now let’s get this bad boy up to 88 mph (faster than a Chris Young fastball), and go back in time. “John from Queens, you’re on the FAN”, comes over the radio as the car appears on Roosevelt Ave.  ”Tanks fuh takin’ my cawl.  Tuh...

Sickels’ Updated Top 120 Prospect Rankings

Minor League Ball’s John Sickels released his Mid-Season Top 120 Prospect List this week and there were some nice surprises from a Mets perspective as Wilmer Flores jumped from being previously unranked to No. 76, an indication of how far Flores has seen his stock rise this season. The Mid-Season Rankings did not include any players selected in the recent 2012 First Year Players...

Mets’ Chris Young is the ugly girl at the bar when the lights come on

The New York Mets lost to the Phillies yesterday 9-2.  It’s not the end of the world, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that the Mets season is over…losses happen.  However, it is concerning that Chris Young continues to struggle later in games.  I liken Chris Young to the ugly girl at the bar who talk to all night, only to see she’s not what you thought she was...

Mini-slump, knuckler might cost Dickey All-Star start

Now that New York Mets right-hander R.A. Dickey is a first-time All-Star at age 37, the knuckleballer is aiming to start the game for the National League. But he might have put that assignment in jeopardy by giving up five runs to the Phillies in seven innings Thursday, saving one of his worst outings of the season for his final start of the first half. Dickey ultimately escaped...

Mets News and Notes: Dickey, Torres, Francisco, Schwinden

Some Mets News and Notes: Tony La Russa is pondering starting R.A. Dickey in the All-Star game. But the NL manager seems hesitant, considering that none of the catchers on his roster have ever caught Dickey’s knuckleball. Other candidates to start for the NL include Stephen Strasburg, Matt Cain, Cole Hamels, Clayton Kershaw and Gio Gonzalez. Dickey will appear on “The David...

Gee, Mets shut down Cubs 3-1

By Dave BuscemaThe Sports Xchange NEW YORK -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum hoped Jeff Samardzija's last start, when he gave up one run in seven innings in a win against the Braves, would help him forget the pounding the New York Mets put on him last month at Wrigley Field. It may well have, but the Mets still managed to push just enough runs across on home runs from Ike...

Cubs 8, Mets 7

NEW YORK -- The Citi Field crowd was silenced as quickly as it had stirred, with Lucas Duda's liner landing in the mitt of Chicago Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol, who quickly threw to first for a game-ending double play. Just like that, the New York Mets fell 8-7 to the Cubs a moment after sparking an adrenaline-filled sense of deja vu. One night after a ninth-inning rally beat...
