Lately the Mets have looked as though they spent the All-Star break thinking up  ways to piss off their fans.  After losing five straight to start the second half of the season and six straight overall, the Mets brass was struggling to stay positive (to put it lightly).  On Thursday afternoon R.A. Dickey and David Wright helped give the most resilient fans in baseball a reason to do just that.  Dickey, who entered the game having allowed five earned runs in the three of his last four starts, was still riding a 10 game personal win streak.

With his team free falling from Wild Card consideration, Dickey came up with another strong effort and helped snap the Mets losing streak while extending his winning streak to an eye popping 11 games.

R.A. Dickey has won 11 straight DECISIONS, 3rd-longest in #Mets history behind Tom Seaver (16, 1969-70) and Dwight Gooden (1985, 14). about 2 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @ESPNStatsInfo ESPN Stats & Info

R.A. lasted 7 1/3 innings while giving up 3 ER and striking out 5.  It wasn’t the dominance we’ve come to expect from Dickey but fortunately he got some more help from his offense as David Wright blasted two more homers and Ike Davis also left the yard.  As Gary Cohen said during today’s broadcast “Well, on a day when the Mets absolutely had to have a game, David Wright has had a game.”  The win pushed Dickey to 13-1 on the year and the most important thing is that the miserable start to this second half has finally taken a turn for the better.

Sure, the Mets may not turn around and rattle off a six game winning streak to counter their recently snapped skid, but who’s to say they won’t?  In fact, that’s exactly the kinda thing this squad has done all season and if they can muster up some magic for this upcoming home stand, maybe it will even entice the front office to make a move and prove that they too believe this team has a shot at the playoffs.

Right now there’s a lot of lip service regarding whether or not this team will be a buyer at the deadline and I’ll be first to say that they should NOT mortgage off their future for mediocre players or short term solutions, but I guarantee deals will go down that will make fans wonder to themselves “why the couldn’t we have pulled something like that off.”  So for now, we’ll see what the next week holds because it will literally determine this teams fait for the rest of 2012.  As for Dickey and Wright, if anyone needs more proof as to just how much they mean to this team, I submit exhibit A thru Z to the right.
