Dirk Hayhurst has really made a name for himself over the past three days. Even Cliff Lee now knows the guy. Hayhurst, a former big league pitcher and current Toronto radio host, accused Clay Buchholz of doctoring the baseball during Wednesday’s Red Sox-Blue Jays game. That kicked off a media firestorm, and Hayhurst has since received plenty of backlash on Twitter. Hayhurst wrote a column that ran on SportsNet’s website on Friday, and he stood by his allegation that Buchholz doctored the baseball during his start against the Jays. He also brought a new pitcher into the mix, albeit in a rather nonchalant manner. Hayhurst wrote: “Pitchers break the law, folks. Some do it in the accepted ‘it’s only five miles over the limit, officer,’ way. Some have big enough names that they can get away with it even when it’s plain for all to see — Cliff Lee‘s hat, anyone?” Well then. Making claims against Buchholz is big. Making claims against Buchholz and a former Cy Young is huge, although Lee see...

Dirk Hayhurst Sticks to His Guns, Says ‘Clay Buchholz Still Cheated’

Dirk Hayhurst opened a huge can of worms on Wednesday when he accused Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz of doctoring the baseball. Two days later, he’s sticking to his guns. Hayhurst, a former pitcher who now works for Rogers SportsNet in Toronto, insisted, “I’m not wrong,” during a radio appearance Friday. He still seems to think that Buchholz used a foreign substance on his...

Phillies rumors: Will Philadelphia trade Cliff Lee?

If the Philadelphia Phillies fall out of contention in the National League East as the summer approaches, left-handed starting pitcher Cliff Lee could find himself as a prime trade target of teams with playoff aspirations. Beyond Lee, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly notes that the Phillies could also make veterans including Jonathan Papelbon, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard...

Ready to help a frustrated fan?

Maybe we should get out the violins and play 'Cry me a river' for Dirk Hayhurst and the Toronto Blue Jays? As the Toronto Blue Jays were getting schooled by Clay Buchholz yesterday in another great performance, local media personality and major league relief pitcher Dirk Hayhurst was moaning on twitter. It is pretty obvious why he was doing this. If you are watching the...

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee calls out teammates

Credit: Tony Dejak/AP Philadelphia Phillies ace Cliff Lee if fed up, and he’s not taking it anymore.  The Phillies are one of the more disappointing teams in baseball thus far, sitting at 13-16 and only ahead of 4 teams in the National League (Cubs, Padres, Mets, and Marlins, who they defeated today).  For a veteran team that has won a World Series within the last 5 years, it’s...

Blue Jays Television Analyst Calls Cliff Lee A Cheater Too

Just mere days after causing controversy by calling Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz a cheater, Dirk Hayhurst is at it again (Who is Dick Hayhurst? Hayhurst serves as a color commentator for Blue Jays television broadcasts and pitched in the major leagues in 2008 and 2009). After the controversy Hayhurst...

John Farrell Responds to Dirk Hayhurst’s Allegations Against Clay Buchholz, Calls Them ‘Unfounded’

John Farrell is always prepared to stick up for his players, so when a Toronto broadcaster made some major accusations against Clay Buchholz, it was clear the Red Sox skipper would have his pitcher’s back. Dirk Hayhurst — former big league pitcher, author of “The Bullpen Gospels” and now a broadcaster for Rogers SportsNet in Toronto — accused Buchholz of doctoring the baseball...

Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci Also Thinks Clay Buchholz Used Substance on Forearm

Dirk Hayhurst‘s allegations against Clay Buchholz caused quite the media firestorm this week. The opinions are still filing in. Hayhurst’s claim that Buchholz doctored the baseball during his start against the Blue Jays on Wednesday was met plenty with of criticism in Boston. Both Dennis Eckersley and Jerry Remy defended Buchholz, as did the pitcher’s teammates and Red Sox...

Clay Buchholz Reacts to Baseball Doctoring Allegations, Says ‘That’s the Way the World Works’

While seemingly everyone else praised Clay Buchholz for another job well done on Wednesday, Toronto broadcaster Dirk Hayhurst focused on what he claimed to be an instance of doctoring the baseball. Hayhurst, a former pitcher who now works for Rogers SportsNet, sent out a series of tweets in which he accused Buchholz of using a substance to manipulate the baseball during Wednesday’s...

Dennis Eckersley to Jack Morris: "Zip it," son!

"Dick, I'm sorry, Dirk Hayhurst" Freudian slip? Scott Levesque Managing Editor Much ado about nothing. At least that's what the Red Sox, Blue Jays and everyone else interested in Major League Baseball thought. Yet, there was one individual who thought it wise to announce (live on television) that pseudo Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz's dominant performance Wednesday...

CSN Report: Phillies Continue to Puruse Stanton

According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, the Phillies are still at it. They’ve made a few calls to Miami in an attempt to nab Giancarlo Stanton and will continue to pursue the 23-year-old rightfielder. Now, this should come as no surprise. Twenty-nine other teams should be doing the same thing, as he’s clearly the best young power hitter in baseball, when healthy. Ruben Amaro...

Phillies-Giants Preview

Madison Bumgarner isn't getting much run support, but the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants usually win when he takes the ball. That's not happening for the Philadelphia Phillies when Cliff Lee does. Bumgarner and the Giants try to extend their season-best winning streak to seven in Monday's night's series opener at AT&T Park, where Lee has a 20-inning scoreless...
