New York Yankees third basemen Alex Rodriguez had a woeful time at the plate during his team's playoff run. The 37-year old hit just .120 (3-for-25) with no runs batted in and 12 strikeouts during the playoffs, leading him to be pinch-hit for and eventually benched. According to Dr. Bryan Kelly, the doctor scheduled to perform the upcoming hip surgery on the Yankees star, he has "no doubt" that the hip injury was reason to blame for Rodriguez's futile playoff performance.“I was more surprised that he was able to play at all with a hip that looked like that,” Kelly said. “Most people would not be able to play with a hip function like this and the imaging that looked like his.”Kelly said that his patients left hip muscles basically shut down toward the end of the season. In fact, they were so weak that A-Rod struggled to simply execute a leg raise during examinations.Rodriguez is said to have compensated by using other muscles surrounding the injury and by having a strong pain tolerance. By the time October rolled around, however, Kelly said that the slugger had "zero degrees of motion through his hip." This led him to try and generate bat speed by tinkering with his swing, which obviously didn't pan out so well.Naturally, due to Rodriguez's admitted steroid use in the past, suspicions arose that perhaps the breakdown was caused by his use of those. Kelly adamantly dispelled those rumors.“The easiest question anyone can ask is if this is related to steroid use. I can say with 100 percent certainty this is not a steroid injury at all. This is a mechanical injury, and mechanics are something you are born with.”Rodriguez already has a surgically repaired right hip in place stemming from 2009. Surgery to repair his ailing left hip will not be performed for another two to four weeks. He is expected to return to the New York lineup around the All-Star Break, or roughly six months following the surgery.Via New York Post.
