Matt Guerrier returned Friday night from the disabled list after being sidelined with right elbow tendinitis since April 19. Although he gave the deciding run that led to the Dodgers eventual loss, Guerrier is reportedly feeling good and ready for the final weeks of the season. Guerrier figures to be one of Mattingly’s go-to bullpen arms on a daily basis for the rest of the way. Guerrier’s experience is a solid boost to this young bullpen, which may be on the verge of losing it’s dominant closer. Guerrier has a lot of experience in the late innings, his veteran confidence may be what Mattingly needs and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Guerrier slid into a setup role, especially if Kenley Jansen is out for the rest of the season.

Yesterday was the first day of September, that of course means that the Dodgers were able to expand their rosters a bit. The Dodgers immediately added Tim Federowicz, Javy Guerra, and John Ely to the big league roster. The Dodgers announced today that they creatively placed Chris Withrow on the 60-day DL, allowing them to add Bobby Abreu to the 40-man roster, then call him back up to the majors.

Guerra’s return is huge for the bullpen, hopefully he can get back on track and take control of his role in the bullpen, whatever that role may be. Ely was recently named PCL Pitcher of the Year as as member of the Triple-A Isotopes. If he can maintain focus and stay on the roll he has been on, he could give the Dodgers’ rotation a much needed boost. Federowicz gets a chance to shine as the 2012 season winds down, if he can play well, Federowicz could find himself on the big league roster on Opening Day next season. Abreu’s return could not have come at a better time, the Dodgers offense is lacking, and his bat on the bench is by far the best the Dodgers have.

More players are expected to return to the Dodgers big league roster once the minor league season comes to a conclusion. Of course it looks like the Isotopes are going to make it to the playoffs, so Dee Gordon, Josh Wall, Elian Herrera, Stephen Fife, and others will have to wait their turn.
