Justin Verlander doesn't like to set personal goals before every season. That's not because he's afraid of setting a goal so high that he can't reach it. It's because he doesn't want to set the bar too low. This past season, the Tigers ace achieved nearly every goal any starting pitcher could possibly set for himself. Verlander, 28, went 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA, striking out 250 in 34 starts. He had a 0.920 WHIP and a .192 opponents' batting average. He won the AL "pitching triple crown" by leading the AL in wins, ERA and strikeouts. For his efforts, Verlander was rewarded with nearly every award possible, including the AL MVP Award, the AL Cy Young Award, Players Choice Player of the Year Award, Players Choice AL Outstanding Pitcher Award, the GIBBY (Greatness in Baseball Yearly) Award for top starter and the Mayo Smith Society's King Tiger Award.
