Wednesday, 2:20 PM – Travis Wood

Wood survives by mixing up the various pieces of his diverse repertoire and keeping hitters off-balance. He does not have great stuff, and does not miss many bats. He throws a four-seam fastball that sits around 89-91 MPH and occasionally gets up around 94 MPH. He also throws an 89-90 MPH two-seamer, which he generally uses on the outer half against righties. and an 87-89 MPH cutter, which he throws in on the hands of righties. Wood has increased his usage of the cutter this year, throwing it about 25% of the time. In the past, he has had success with his 78-81 MPH changeup, but the pitch has not been very effective in 2012. The southpaw throws the change almost exclusively against right-handers. Wood also mixes in a 73-76 MPH knuckle-curve and an 81-83 MPH slider. Both breaking balls are fringy, and he does not go to them very often overall. However, he leans relatively heavily on the slider against lefties.

Guy has scoreboard marriage proposal fail

I feel for this poor guy after watching the below video. Greg, went to Wrigley Field on Monday night and was planning on proposing to his girlfriend during the game via a message on the scoreboard saying, “Erica, will you marry me?” In classic Cubs fashion, the message did scroll across the scoreboard as he had planned, but unfortunately his girlfriend had left to use the restroom...

Last night Geovany Soto was traded to the Texas Rangers for Jake Brigham. Brigham is a 24 year old right handed pitcher who has spent each of 2011 and 2012 for AA Frisco. His ERA over 2 seasons has basically been 4.5 and his FIP not much better. His FIP sits at 4.58 this year, his second time through the league.  Brigham was drafted in the 6th round by the Rangers and thanks to...

Cubs Hitting Streak Continues

Everyone knows the Chicago Cubs own the most embarrassing streak in pro sports — 104 years without a championship and counting. But it is not until nights like Tuesday that we are reminded the Cubs also own the coolest streak in pro sports — 7,441 consecutive games with a hit and counting. That streak looked to be in jeopardy as Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett took a no-hitter...

David Kaplan is reporting that the Dodgers remain very much in play for Dempster. However, nothing is close at this time. Jon Heyman tweets that contrary to reports the Yankees are no longer in on Dempster. In hopes of keeping...

Minor League PA Operator Tossed From Game After Playing 'Three Blind Mice' Directed at Umpires

Ejections are rather commonplace during baseball games. Players get ejected. Managers get ejected. Even bench coaches and fans can be ejected on rare occasions. But the ballpark announcer? That's a new one. Daytona Cubs PA announcer Derek Dye was ejected by umpire Mario Seneca on Wednesday, after Dye played "Three Blind Mice" on the stadium speakers following a questionable...

Chicago Cubs Shedding Payroll Before the Deadline

Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer officially began the hard work of shedding payroll before the deadline by consummating two trades during last night’s game. Reed Johnson and Geovany Soto were seen hugging teammates in the middle of the game, but they weren’t the most important pieces to go last night. The Cubs finally swung a deal with the Atlanta Braves after the Ryan...

New Cub Arodys Vizcaino

I was getting ready for bed last night when all these trades happened and I assumed I'd make it to bed at my bedtime. Then I saw Arodys Vizcaino's name surface as one of the two players the Cubs were getting in return for Reed Johnson and Paul Maholm. At that point I knew I was going to be up past my bedtime.  I had figured when we first heard of these players leaving,...
