Chase Headley displayed great power in 2012. Will he do it again in 2013?Photo courtesy of SD Dirk. San Diego Padres — Predicted Finish: Fourth Place, NL West I do not want to say that the 2013 San Diego Padres are a bleak source of fantasy production, but I also don’t want to over value their players. They do have young stud, Yonder Alonso, who I have been tracking for about 3 seasons now.  He could be a good fantasy option if he has a true breakout season this year, but then again, he does not have much around him and he plays in a pitcher-friendly home park, so I do not see elite numbers in his near future. We also have Chase Headley, who is in the past few seasons has been a terrific 3B option. They also have a few other decent to good options in guys like Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin, Everth Cabrera and Will Venable, so let’s take a little closer look shall we?   Padres Offense: Player Name Pos. Micah Owings is trying to make the switch from pitcher to position player, much like Rick Ankiel who made it happen as a member of the Cardinals.

A spectacular winter Down Under earned second baseman Adam Buschini a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres. Buschini, 25, recently won the Triple Crown in the Australian Baseball League. Over 42 games for the Canberra Cavalry, Buschini hit .363 with 15 homers and 50 RBI. San Diego vice president of player development and international scouting Randy Smith told MLB...

Three for the Show: Shortstops

This is the fourth (not even halfway yet) in a ten-part series where I will identify the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up next: Shortstop. Finding MLB potential at shortstop is not an easy proposition in the Padres’ minor league system. There are guys who can hit and guys who can pick it, but there’s no sure-fire player that looks to...

Nationals Add Micah Owings Bat in MInor Deal

In one of the most interesting signings of the winter, the Washington Nationals have signed Micah Owings to a minor league contract, with an invitation to major league camp.  Owings missed most of 2012 with an elbow injury, but his projected comeback from that procedure is not what makes this deal different.  Despite sporting a lifetime won-lost record of 32-33, Owings is...

Indians add outfield depth by signing Jeremy Hermida

The Cleveland Indians continued their minor league signings by adding Jeremy Hermida. Hermida spent last season with San Diego collecting 27 plate appearances. Adding Hermdia will provide the Indians with depth at the minor league level. Hermida was once a highly thought of prospect but has never stuck in the majors. In parts of eight big league seasons Hermida has compiled a .257...

The Washington Nationals have signed Micah Owings to a minor league deal. Owings, 30, was called a first-basemen in the teams announcement suggesting that he has given up pitching. Owings pitched for six seasons at the major league level. As a pitcher Owings compiled a 4.86 ERA and 32-33 record over 68 starts and 70 relief appearances, he had trouble with injuries and control. Owings...

Indians sign OF Hermida to minor league deal

The Cleveland Indians signed outfielder Jeremy Hermida to a minor league contract, ESPN.com reported Monday. Hermida, 29, was rated as a top 30 prospect by Baseball America three straight years, including No. 4 overall in 2006 but has not reached his projected potential. The 2002 first round draft pick of the Florida Marlins has not played regularly in the major leagues since...

First Pitch: Would You Rather Have Polanco/Hanson or Chase Headley?

Jim Bowden had an article at ESPN talking about how the San Diego Padres should trade Chase Headley right now. In the article he listed the Pittsburgh Pirates as one of two teams with a moderate chance of landing Headley, noting that a package of Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson could get the deal done. Bowden does a lot of these types of articles. He takes a player who isn’t necessarily...
