By the end of last season, I was pretty excited about Ike Davis. He got off to a horrible start in 2012, but seemed to finish strong with 32 dingers. His average still sucked, but it seemed like things were finally starting to click for him. Now it’s a month into the season and he can’t get above the Mendoza line. Over in left field, Lucas Duda is getting on base and hitting with some serious power. He’s moving up in the order and Davis is moving down. Assuming Sandy Alderson fulfills his promise and nabs a decent outfielder before the deadline and during the offseason, it’s a safe bet that the front office is going to have to make a decision as to which player is the first baseman of the future. I think it’s reasonable to say that Ike isn’t going to finish the season with a sub-200 batting average. On the other hand, Duda’s going to come down to Earth at some point. These are two very streaky hitters we’re talking about here, and Ike is having his slump in April for the second seas...

Mets Wrap: Jordany Valdespin Homer Stops Slide

Well, the Mets weren’t going to lose them all. Jordany Valdespin, whose personality would be ideal for an NBA point guard, hit a three-run pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning to lift the Mets to a 7-6 victory to snap a six-game losing streak. “We got some offense going,’’ manager Terry Collins said. “The most frustrating thing about the past six days is we’ve been...

Harvey and Wheeler: One Ace Showing, Another One In The Hole

Blue chip pitching prospects are professional sports’ most delicate flower. Except, unlike a flower, no scientifically proven method has been established regarding proper cultivation. There’s no “right” way to bring a teenager up through an organization’s system while still absolutely maximizing his production at the major league level. And in the back of everyone’s mind...

David Wright, El Dramático And Clutch Offense Spark Another Rally

When you live on the West Coast, sometimes you have to listen to the other team’s broadcast. It can be excruciating. When your team starts winning, especially in clutch fashion, there’s nothing better. That’s what happened to me while listening to the Braves announcers last night. When the Braves made a move, the Mets had an answer. Clutch offense was the theme of the game...

Montero Tagged For Ten Runs In 11-4 B-Mets Loss

Erie 11, Binghamton 4 The Erie SeaWolves tagged Rafael Montero for ten runs on ten hits and handed the Binghamton Mets an 11-4 loss on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Francisco Pena collected three hits and drove in two runs in the losing effort. The B-Mets were in control for the first three innings. Binghamton grabbed the lead in the second against Erie starter Victor Larez....

Matt Harvey Named National League Pitcher of the Month

Matt Harvey was named the Pitcher of the Month for April, the first Met to win the honor since R.A. Dickey last did so in June, 2012. Harvey, 24, went 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA and 46 strikeouts in six April starts. His four wins tied for the National League lead, while his 1.56 ERA is third in the league for the month. His 46 strikeouts are tied for fourth in the league. Harvey became...

Panteliodis Solid In Debut, But St. Lucie Still Loses 3-2

Fort Myers 3, St. Lucie 2 The Fort Myers Miracle edged out the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday, on a night where Alex Panteliodis made his FSL debut. Pants was able to provide five effective innings in his season debut and first start off the DL, where he allowed an earned run off just four hits and a walk. His only blemish was allowing a solo home run in the fourth inning, and otherwise...

Jordany Valdespin: Pinch-Hitting Extraordinaire

The New York Mets have a weapon, and that weapon's name is Jordany Valdespin.  The 25 year old made his MLB debut last season and has been belting clutch homeruns ever since.  In his brief career (117 games), he's blasted 6 pinch-hit homeruns in 58 plate appearances.  That's 1 pinch-hit homerun for every 10 pinch-hitting opportunities.  His pinch-hitting OPS is .842...

Giving The Mets Horse Names

In honor of the Kentucky Derby, I decided to give the Mets – past and present – horse names. Some are humorous, some are descriptive, and some are critical. I know I missed some. If you have suggestions, let’s hear them. The Man With Words PRESENT METS Matt Harvey: “Nasty Stuff’’ Jon Niese: “Lefty Heat’’ Zack Wheeler: “Promises, Promises’’ Ike Davis: “Hole...

Horrorless House

First off, I want to make sure that I cover the beginning of the game and give proper due to John Buck, Lucas Duda, and Marlon Byrd. All three hit home runs before the ninth inning. Buck keeps his hot start to the season alive with a two run home run. Lucas Duda's home run came in the next inning and proved that he can stop being so damn streaky and hit a home run every once...

Zack Wheeler, Contextually

Is it time to worry about Zack Wheeler? No, it's not. I know it's not a good way to hold the reader's attention to give the answer at the top. But I've never been into one singular form to translate into function. But all this hullabaloo about Zack Wheeler is useless. Bottom line is that Wheeler's stats in Las Vegas mean nothing, and we knew that going...
