Around 2006 it was once dreamed that the Mets would have this stud group of outfielders, who were all home grown.

Lastings Milledge in left field, Fernando Martinez in right field and Carlos Gomez in center field.

Now there all gone and the only one who turned out productive for the Mets was Carlos Gomez who was the center piece in the Johan Santana trade.

After winning the starting job as the Twins center fielder, Gomez would be traded to the Brewers for J.J. Hardy and has been their center fielder since.  A defensive stand out with great speed and a solid arm, his bat still hasn't matured to that of a five-tool prospect ( .243 lifetime BA).

Milledge was traded by the Mets to the Nats for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.  Church was traded a year later for Jeff Francoeur and a year later Francoeur was dumped for Joaquin Arias, who was non-tendered after the season.

In Washington Milledge was traded with Joel Hanrahan for Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett, after the season Milledge was non-tendered by the Pirates and signed a minor league deal with the White Sox.  After a year with the Sox AAA affiliate he has signed with Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

But of the others there was the jewel of the system Fernando Martinez, as the other two were traded and became less then what they were projected or at least hoped to have become, FMart was the one we held onto.  And as injuries have ravaged his career maybe the Mets held on too long and should have taken one of those rumored trades, but it still feels like the team jumped the gun.

While Milledge produced a decent catcher and two productive corner outfielders and Cargo helped bring back Johan, it's still hard to believe that FMart was essentially given away...

One-time top Mets prospect Fernando Martinez is now a Houston Astro. Houston, which has first dibs in waiver claims by virtue of its MLB-worst record in 2011, selected the 23-year-old outfielder. source ESPN NY
