The Philadelphia Phillies are winding toward the conclusion of this largely disappointing season. In a couple of games, maybe even 1, the Phillies will be eliminated from postseason play for the first time since 2006. It was a good run. But is it over? That is one of several questions facing Phillies brass as they move toward next season.

The Phillies will deem this offseason as a re-tooling period. The hope is that they can plug some of the numerous holes on this team, get the boat to stop taking on water and rebound next year. And it could just happen that way.

The Phillies held open auditions for much of the second half of this season, yet somehow played their way back into contention, only to fall short. Any way you slice it, it was a much more interesting second half than first. But a ton of questions remain.

Will Darrin Ruf be able to make it at the major league level? Is Domonic Brown a legit everyday player? Is John Mayberry Jr’s second half performance anything that can be sustained for a full season? Or will the Phillies need one or two outfielders via free agency? Will Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee return to form next year? Will Ryan Howard rebound from the Achilles’ injury and be able to put up decent numbers? Will Chase Utley be healthy? Can he be the third baseman the Phillies need? And most importantly, what to do with the bullpen?

And those are just some of the questions.

How Ruben Amaro and the Phillies front office proceed through this crucial offseason could determine a lot. Will the Phillies continue to be all in and do anything to win, or will the organization revert back to days of tighter purses?

If the Phillies are willing to take one more chance, they’ll need to spend some money in the offseason. They need no less than one veteran bullpen arm. They will need at least one outfielder, hopefully with some pop. And if Chase Utley and/or Freddie Galvis aren’t the answers at third base, you can add that to the list of needs.

Two things are certain… Ruben Amaro will be very busy, and he will be under the microscope to make sure this offseason counts.
