TEAMS: New York Mets

The Mets have already won the offseason. Why? Jonathan Broxton is a Kansas City Royal.Maybe the Mets were never the lead dog for this big dog, but any connection between the Mets and Broxton, no matter how small, was enough to bring chills up my spine. A lot of the conversation about the Royals' $4 million contract for Broxton centered around the price. Was it too much? Does four million bucks now qualify as too much? Or is it just too much for a guy who pitched 12.2 innings last season? Can he close? Is he a setup guy? But here's the question we're all forgetting: "Does he suck?" The answer, as it refers to the Caucasian Benitez, is yes. If Broxton asked for a dollar a year to play for the Mets, and if he promised to cook his weight in food for the rest of the team after every game, I still wouldn't want him near the Mets. And don't give me this "low-risk, high reward" crap. It's just that, crap. If not for R.A. Dickey I'd tell you tha...

Mets looking for new backup C, Paulino on the outs

“In Ronny Paulino’s first season in New York, the team did not view him as a diligent worker, adequate defensive catcher, or offensive force off the bench, and some are pushing to replace the arbitration-eligible backstop,” according to the Daily News. this post is still being updated

Alderson: We Want To Have Franchise Players

Sandy Alderson, J.P. Ricciardi, John Ricco and Paul DePodesta were all on hand to host a Hot Stove Talk with Season Ticket holders on Wednesday at Citi Field. The Mets tweeted many of the responses which I thought was very cool of them and a few of them shed some light on a lot of things on the minds of Mets fans these days. All General Managers tell their fan bases that they are...

Mets Still Quiet, Blame Omar not Sandy

The expression many of us still have since Minaya was fired as Mets GM two years ago. Like many Mets fans, the lack of action in this years free agent market is starting to get to me. I can understand the team isn’t exactly in the position we’d like them to be both financially and talent-wise, but when are they even going to be linked to someone? The only names it seems...

New York Mets Tidbits: Parnell, Garza, Wilson

Still no closer? Is it possible that it’s some Jedi mind trick to say they don’t have a closer but Bobby Parnell is actually the closer? Mets fans aren’t happy with Parnell but he was only given half a chance. He would close then be in the 7th inning the next day. You have to throw him to the wolves and see if he can sink or swim. Parnell did have a knuckle curve...

Mets have interest in Varitek, not Posada or Hudson

If you’re a free agent or player on the trade block and you’re not on the ‘bargain shopping’ New York Mets list of possibilities, you may be in for a long Winter.  Such is likely the case for former Yankee catcher Jorge Posada and current San Diego Padres second basemen Orlando Hudson. Seeing a potential need at his position and presumably an opportunity...

Hudson is available for trade; Mets have no interest

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Padres have made Orlando Hudson “very available this offseason.” However, while the Omar Minaya administration had interest in Hudson, according to Sherman, the new administration does not. Michael Baron (Posted on Dec. 1, 2011): I’ve always liked Hudson and he’s stated a desire to play for the Mets over the years...

Capps has not heard from the Mets since GM Meetings

According to the New York Post, “Paul Kinzer, the agent for reliever Matt Capps, says he hasn’t heard from Mets since the GM meetings,’ during which the Mets had told him they had a ‘possible interest’ in his client. Matthew Cerrone: To me, Capps is a middle reliever. He can be better than what he showed last year. But, even still, he shouldn’...

Alderson On Reyes: I Only Know What I Read In The Papers

Sandy Alderson just finished a very short conference call with reporters. Adam Rubin was gracious enough to fill is un via Twitter. I’ll be on my own conference call with Alderson later on with other Mets bloggers. Follow Adam on Twitter at @AdamRubinESPN As I mentioned in a comment earlier, I had my doubts about that Reyes offer being bandied about by Jon Heyman. It would...

Mets not in on Broxton

Reports indicate that Jonathan Broxton will select his next team within the week, but despite needing a closer the Mets aren't believed to be involved. The Mets never appeared interested in Broxton and probably his injury history is why. I'm glad the Mets are passing on him, Broxton seems to be an injury waiting to happen...

Loewen gets minor league deal with Mets (AP)

Pitcher-turned-outfielder Adam Loewen has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets. The 27-year-old Loewen, who will attend major league spring training under Tuesday's deal, was 6 for 32 (.188) for Toronto last season with one home run and four RBIs. He hit .306 at Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League with 46 doubles, 17 homers and 85 RBIs.

Tweets from Mets during private Q&A with Sandy

The Mets are holding an exclusive, private Q&A for season ticket holders with Sandy Alderson and members of the front office. Here are quotes they are sending out on Twitter: new TWTR.Widget({ version: 2, type: 'profile', rpp: 10, interval: 30000, width: 'auto', height: 600, theme: { shell: { background: '#fafafa', color...

Mets May Replace Paulino, Inquired On Jack Wilson

It's been a quiet offseason for the Mets to this point, but we can expect them to pursue help at shortstop whether or not Jose Reyes returns. They'll also look for depth in the rotation, the bullpen and potentially the outfield. Here’s the latest on some possible offseason moves... Some Mets officials were displeased with Ronny Paulino’s defense, offense and work...

Mets are strong players for Octavio Dotel

In a post to MLB.com’s Hot Stove blog, Anthony DiComo says, “The Mets are strong players for right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel,” according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. The Cardinals have also expressed interest in retaining Dotel, explains DiComo, “as he played a significant role in their World Series run following a midseason trade from...
