Biogenesis fever is sweeping the nation, and former MLB pitcher Dan Meyer has caught it, Meyer, who pitched for several teams over his career but is most well-known for being one of the three players the Braves traded to Oakland for Tim Hudson in 2004, went after Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo, who was suspended 50 games today, on Twitter. Thx alot. #ahole — Dan Meyer (@Dmy53) August 5, 2013 Meyer was a member of the Phillies during Spring Training 2011, and lost out on a job in the Phillies bullpen after his four walk, four strikeout performance in 5 2/3 innings that spring. Bastardo got one of the jobs (and as has been pointed out, probably the *last* job in the pen), but it's not as if Meyer was the last guy cut by the Phillies due to a glut of capable relievers in their system at the time. After being released by the Phillies, Meyer signed with the Pirates for the 2011 season and threw 19 1/3 innings of 7.45 ERA ball. He spent 2012 with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, and signed with the Orioles this past winter, but was released in March without throwing a pitch in a game in Spring Training. His Twitter bio reads "ex-MLB pitcher and oldest college senior in the land", seemingly indicating that his playing days are done. While it's not really fair to point the finger solely at Bastardo and his PED use for ending Meyer's career, Meyer's reaction is one that is understandable, given that his career is over and that Bastardo has made over $3 million in his career with two more seasons of arbitration eligibility remaining. Maybe Meyer could have made some of that money if Bastardo wasn't juicing. Maybe Meyer could have made some of that money if he himself had juiced. We really don't know either way, but the path of logic that Meyer has taken is one that is becoming more and more common when it comes to PED users. [follow]
