Yesterday the Mets beat the Braves 4-2 thanks to a good outing by Dickey, a strong bullpen, and homers from Wright and Duda. Last season the Mets only had 9 games all season where they went yard a collective three times, but it already happened in 2012. As a whole, the Mets will look to improve on hitting with runners in scoring position (1-8 yesterday) as they take on Mike Minor and the Braves. The Braves bats will have to deal with Jon Niese in his season debut today. Niese last season had a 11-11 record with a 4.40 ERA over 157.1 innings. His 2011 season was cut short due to injury. This past spring Jon pitched 22.0 innings with a 5.23 ERA. Last year against the Braves Jon totaled 19 innings in 3 starts wi...

Mets Announce Jon Niese Deal

The Mets  made it official and announced the five-year, $25.5 extension for Jon Niese, who, if he lives up to expectations will make that a bargain. Premium left-handers are in high demand and Niese has already shown a high upside. Throw in two team option years and the deal could rise to $45.5 million. The Mets have been targets for bad contractual decisions, but this is a...

Niese flirts with no-hitter as Mets sweep Braves

The New York Mets completed the three game sweep of the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon, to open the season 3-0 for the first time since 2007: Jonathon Niese took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning on Sunday afternoon, but after walking Dan Uggla, Freddie Freeman drilled a single into rightfield. Prior to the Uggla walk, Niese had retired 15 straight batters before things got...

2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Yoenis Cespedes strikes again, Lucas Duda blasts two

Lucas Duda Bubbles pop, as home runs fly and blown saves continue.  Opening day has been a little crazy so far, well, with 4 different opening days around the league things seemed to be a bit hectic. The first couple of “opening days” saw the 2011 “The Year of the Pitcher” overflow into 2012. However it wasn’t until yesterday when the hitters decided to join the party...

Look who's 3-0 and look who's 0-3

Squawker Lisa, there's still plenty of room if you want to climb aboard the Met bandwagon. See what a closer looks like when he's 3-for-3 in saves. See a veteran pitcher coming back from a serious injury pitch five shutout innings on Opening Day instead of jumping on a trampoline. See a young starter who shows up in camp in shape, isn't nervous about pitching in New York...

Braves limited to 3 hits in loss to Mets

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jonathon Niese took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his first start since signing a rich contract and the New York Mets completed a season-opening sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 7-5 victory Sunday. Collins Says He’s Moving Duda To No. 5 Spot In Batting Order

The Dude abides… “I’d put him up against anybody in the league as far as power.” That’s what manager Terry Collins had to say after today’s 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. Collins also said that he expects Duda to surpass Jason Bay in the batting order, and that he will be going from the six spot in the lineup to the No. 5 hole beginning with the next series against...

MURPHY PUSHES METS TO 4-0

Mike "My Hand Sure is Yummy" Pelfrey didn't have his best stuff tonight but did something we don't often see from the Yeti in orange and blue-he battled, even after the Nats went up 3-0. David Wright drove in a run to cut the lead to 2. The big space blast came from captain Kirk Nieuwenhuis when he tied the game at 3 with a 2 run jack. The Mets' new found pen...

Mets 4, Braves 2

Lucas Duda homered twice and became the first player to take advantage of the pulled-in fences at Citi Field, leading R.A. Dickey and the New York Mets over the Atlanta Braves 4-2 Saturday. David Wright kept hitting with a homer and two singles as the Mets improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2009. Coming off a down year and injury-interrupted spring training, the All-Star had...

Having fun with ESPN projected numbers for the Mets

ESPN has a fun feature where it takes a player’s current stats and uses them to project what a player will do for the rest of the season. It’s not meant to be taken seriously but it’s a nice thing to have when you wonder what a player will do if he keeps up his current pace. It’s especially meaningless right now but that doesn’t mean we can’t look at it and have a little...

Pre-Game: New York Mets (1-0) vs. Atlanta Braves (0-1)

The First Place Mets will be back on the field to take on the Braves this afternoon, and after a day off, it feels great to have written this. The Mets showed off Citi Field and honored the late Gary Carter in style with a 1-0 win over the Bravos this past Thursday as David Wright had the only RBI and Johan Santana pitched 5 shutout innings in his return to the mound after 500 days...

Doug’s Dugout: One Game At A Time

In Doug’s Dugout today, we discuss: Beating the Braves, the Mets’ new Mantra, and other random thoughts. Anytime the Mets sweep the Braves, regardless of expectations, it’s a great feeling.  Because no team in the Eastern Division has inflicted more hurt on the Amazins.  If only they had stayed in the Western Division, like it was the first year of divisional play in 1969...
