Philadelphia Phillies (52-63) vs Washington Nationals (55-60)  Cliff Lee (10-5, 3.13) vs. Taylor Jordan (1-3, 3.76) Time: 7:05, Nationals Park TV: CSN, MLBN Weather: 81, chance of storms Media: Twitter and Facebook Prior to the start of the 2013 season, the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies were predicted by many to compete in the National League East; however, both teams have failed to meet those expectations.  Both teams have been counted out of the race, but they are giving some of their younger players a chance to play. Friday was another ugly night for the Phillies as they were blown out by the Nats, 9-2.  They’ll turn to Cliff Lee for a better outing, but he has even been struggling lately.  Lee is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA in his last three starts (18 innings).  He has been a victim of the long ball, even in parks that aren’t exactly hitter-friendly. Lineup: Gameday Beer:  Let’s go with a light, crisp witbier today. This is Allagash White, a favorite of mine. Very cool...

Losses Keep Piling Up For Phils

Cliff Lee gave the Phillies a quality start tonight. Why would that be enough? (Photo: AP) All the best metaphors and similes to describe a Phillies loss in which they blow an early lead have been exhausted over the course of this dreadful season. At this stage, you can only come out and say it: The Phillies were up 4-0 to start the third inning of tonight’s game. They’d end...

Phillies Sign 16 Year Old Luis Encarnacion

According to Baseball America, the Phillies have signed 16 year old international prospect Luis Encarnacion to a contract worth $1 million. He’s considered the #4 international prospect and a top hitter in Latin America according to the linked article. He turned 16 at midnight this morning, and shortly thereafter the Phillies jumped in with the signing. This is a done deal, unlike...

Darin Ruf's MLB Man Cave Interview

I was searching for something on Darin Ruf, since he's one of the few good things going for the Phillies right now, and I came across this video from last year. He seems like a levelheaded guy and I hope he can continue to improve defensively in the outfield, because the Phils need his bat in the lineup. Perhaps he secures a starting gig for next season, along with Revere and...

Storyline: Front Office Decisions for the Philadelphia Phillies

Even after the trading deadline passed without Michael Young in a new uniform, the Philadelphia Phillies still can deal the third baseman through a waiver transaction in August. It’s easy to publish opinions and predictions before the event; however, this piece was my writing sample on July 22 (more in welcome section), when the Phils had a shot to win the division. How close...

Phillies sign Luis Encarnacion, 16-year old international prospect

The Phillies have yet to finalize the details on the previously reported contract with Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, but the team has signed a contract with one of the top-rated international prospects. According to Baseball America, the Phillies have signed Luis Encarnacion, a 16-year old third base prospect from the Dominican Republic. Per Baseball America, Encarnacion...

Phillies Sign Ryan Demmin

The Lakewood Blue Claws announced that the Phillies have signed 25-year old lefty Ryan Demmin from the independent Frontier League’s Normal CornBelters. Demmin was signed in 2010 as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Nationals and spent 2012 with the High-A Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League. Demmin averaged about a strikeout per inning pitched in organized ball from...

Chase Utley: A Phillie for Life

The Phillies made the official announcement yesterday that Chase Utley will be a Phillie for life. They have signed him to a contract extension for 2-years at up to $27 million, with 3 option years that would max out the entire contract at around $75 million if he stays all 5 years. He would be 39 years old in the 5th year. There is some risk involved as Utley has battled serious...

Another Bullpen Meltdown, Another Loss

It was a fun second inning. The Phillies jumped all over Nationals pitcher Taylor Jordan, featuring a two run blast from Darin Ruf, a safety squeeze RBI from Cliff Lee, and the offense batted around. Unfortunately there were seven and a half innings left. Lee wasn't bad tonight. His command...

Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez’s innocence is confirmed in Biogenesis scandal

Top Performance Last Night: Gio Gonzalez Readies A Pitch In The 5th Inning Of His CG In Houston Baseball is known, and has been for a very long time, to be America’s pastime. It’s the sport of our country: a hot dog, cold beer, and peanuts on a Sunday afternoon at the park. It symbolizes freedom, unity, and everything American. That all changed when greed started to sneak its...

A year removed from the Stephen Strasburg fiasco, it’s apparent Mike Rizzo cost the Washington Nationals a title

Losers of four consecutive contests, it’s unquestionable that Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo banged the pooch shelving flamethrower Stephen Strasburg in 2012. Although flourishing during a rare playoff run, Rizzo shutdown the 25-year-old Strasburg (5-9, 3.01ERA) last September following 159 1/3 innings of work. Wrongly forced to hang in the dugout like a bat cave...

Lannan gets lit up as Nationals pound Phillies

Chase Utley had two of the Phillies' four hits in a 9-2 loss to the Nationals. In his time with the Washington Nationals, John Lannan posted a 3-13 record against the Phillies. In his first two starts against his former team, the Phillies were victorious. Lannan's return to Nationals Park,...

Nats win on Strasburg's 1st career complete game

Stephen Strasburg struggled during pregame warmups and tweaked his groin in the second inning. Yet after nine innings, he was still on the mound for the first time in the majors. Strasburg pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 in the first complete game of his career, Jayson Werth had his second straight three-hit game and the Washington Nationals completed a three-game sweep...

Nats' Strasburg shuts down Phillies

Stephen Strasburg pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 in the first complete game of his career, Jayson Werth had his second straight three-hit game and the Washington Nationals completed a three-game sweep with a 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night. Strasburg (6-9) dominated the reeling Phillies for his first win since July 7 against San Diego. The Nationals...

Strasburg Throws First Complete Game In Shutout Of Phillies

If you blinked, you probably missed the slightest of smiles that flickered across Stephen Strasburg’s face as he stepped off the mound after the Washington Nationals’ (57-60) 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies (52-65). Strasburg had just closed the book on the first complete-game shutout of his career, and true to form, he hardly showed any emotion as 32 thousand...
