Gio Gonzalez took the hill for his Washington Nationals on Wednesday for a tilt against the Miami Marlins at a chilly Nationals Park. Gonzalez performed more than admirably, pitching 6 innings of shutout ball with 5 strikeouts. Gonzalez even had a hand in contributing to the team’s offensive cause, hitting his second career home run in the 5th inning of Washington’s 3-0 shutout win over Miami. Speaking of hand, Gonzalez had a quote for the ages following the game about having to pitch in less-than-balmy April temperatures. And it’s a real doozy of a humdinger of a quote. Speaking to MASN broadcaster Bob Carpenter following the game, here’s what Gio Gonzalez had to say about weathering the chilly weather (via D.C. Sports Bog): “It was definitely difficult, especially with this cold weather,” he said. “It was tough to get a grip. I felt like I was making love to my hand. Just one of those things where I was constantly trying to find some grip, somehow, some way. The rosin bag, whatever, licking the fingers. But it felt good after that.” Alrighty then. To get that out of your head, here’s Gonzalez’s home run: That’s better. Nice swing, though, huh? It almost was like he was making love to his bat with that swing. Wait. What?
