The August 1st, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Downs placed on disabled list, Halos make no additional deadline deals, Rangers acquire Dempster to counter the Angels' addition of Greinke and much more...

The Story: Scott Downs was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder strain and Hisanori Takahashi was recalled to take his place on the roster.

The Monkey Says: This might only be a two-week thing, but it is really going to hurt the bullpen.  On the bright side, this does explain his struggles after the break, so hopefully it means he can come back and dominate like his old self.  The bigger issue here though is that it makes it even more unfortunate that Jerry Dipoto was unable to add another southpaw reliever at the deadline as he had hoped.

The Story: The Angels made no additional trades at yesterday's deadline.

The Monkey Says: That additional reliever would have been nice, but it never happened.  In fact, there was nary a mention of an Angel rumor yesterday.  No doubt Dipoto was still working the phones, but nothing ever got serious enough for anyone to bother leaking it to a media member.

The Story: The Rangers acquired starting pitcher Ryan Dempster just before the deadline expired.

The Monkey Says: Oh, so close!  For awhile there it looked like the Rangers were going to get totally skunked on pitching, but they pulled this one out of their butts.  Dempster is no Greinke, but he can be very good and will be a welcome addition to an injury-ravaged Texas rotation, which sucks for the Angels.  The good news here is that Dempster has never pitched in the American League, so he might struggle to adjust.  He also has been on the DL twice already this season, so he isn't exactly a sure bet to stay healthy the rest of the way either.

The Story: The Angels were one of the big winners of the deadline.

The Monkey Says: Which, of course, means nothing if the Greinke addition doesn't lead to some extra wins on the field.  But hey, we won the deadline!

The Story: Mike Trout could join elite company if he finishes the season with a slugging percentage over .600.

The Monkey Says: The names of the players from the non-juiced ball era make for some pretty impressive company.

The Story: Prospect SP Nick Maronde has been promoted to Double-A.

The Monkey Says: This is pretty big because Maronde is now officially the Angels top pitching prospect after Pena and Hellweg were dealt away.  In fact, he might be their second-best prospect overall.  At this rate, Maronde should be on pace to be ready late in 2013 or early in 2014.
