The Angels of a year ago went into the season with their rotation feted as the strength of the team. Yes, they went out and got Pujols, and no one knew Trout was going to explode the way he did. The rotation was what impressed everyone. Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, C.J. Wilson and Ervin Santana were considered a formidable top four and Jerome Williams was a cut above for a fifth starter. But the rotation did not work out as most expected. Weaver was as good as ever, but Haren had health problems and was not as effective after the early part of the season. And even Zack Greinke picked up late in the season could not help the team reach the playoffs in what has become a very tough division. With Haren, Santana and Greinke all gone this off season, the Angels needed to rebuild a bit and Tommy Hanson ended up being their target. Know...

Braves May Have Traded Tommy Hanson to Avoid Injury Concerns

When the Atlanta Braves pulled off a deal with the Los Angeles Angels yesterday to send Tommy Hanson west, the deal felt lopsided.  The Braves were getting a relief pitcher who had never developed into anything close to a star.  Hanson, on the other hand, was a top prospect and exceeded expectations once he came up.  The trade seemed to be a loss on the Braves' end, but there...

The Zack Greinke Alternative

There’s not a whole lot of question right now regarding just who is the top free-agent starting pitcher available. When in doubt, follow the Dodgers. It was thought that re-signing Zack Greinke would be the Angels’ main offseason priority. They’re still interested, but they might be priced out. The Dodgers are in there and flashing their wallets. Zack to the Future

"Maybe it works out better that the deal [with Washington] didn’t go through. In two years I might be a free agent, and then they get to keep the players [who would have been] in the trade. And some of those guys could end up being key players for them."(Zack Greinke, via Washington Post, 3/22/2011) And so, here we are two years after Zack Greinke snubbed...

When the Angels allowed Dan Haren to walk away for nothing, the immediate speculation was that he’d look to stay on the West Coast. There seemed to be a natural fit with the Padres, and though there were lingering questions regarding Haren’s health, it was clear he was going to get a shot somewhere, and it was clear he was going to be in some sort of demand. Haren seems to have...
