For those of us concerned with pitching depth, Rich Harden seemed like a viable alternative. He's a guy who has battled injuries making his cost reasonable but with a much higher ceiling then any of the other remaining free agents. Couple that with his familiarity with the front office and it seems to make as much sense as Chris Young. Unfortunately for Harden and to a lesser extent the Mets ( if they were interested), he had shoulder surgery last week and is shooting for a 2013 comeback...In Harden's case, the injury caused a significant drop in velocity, and led to numerous other physical problems as he compensated for pitching with an unstable shoulder. So last week, Harden, 30, decided to have his shoulder repaired, though there were some offers for the free-agent starter (most recently for the A's this winter.source SF Gate
