We’re about 200 days from major league free agents being able to sign with teams other than their own. One such player is Cole Hamels, whose contract with the Phillies ends after the 2012 season. If Hamels isn’t re-signed within six days of the end of the 2012 World Series, he can sign elsewhere.I’ve been documenting Hamels’ contract status for almost a year. It began last May with a comparison of a Hamels deal and the contract signed by Tigers ace Justin Verlander. It continued in late-August after Jered Weaver signed a team-friendly pact with the Angels. As time has worn on, those two deals have become less and less meaningful with regard to Hamels’ impending payday. We aren’t looking at numbers like $85 or $90 million. We’re looking more so at a figure close to $120 million.I wrote several months ago that a five-year, $100 million contract with a sixth-year team option at $22 million (with a $12 million buyout) would likely get Hamels signed. He gets his $20 million per season but...

Cole Hamels looks ready for a Cy Young season.
National League Cy Young winner for 2012 Cole Hamels? Why not?
In 2011, his 2.79 earned run average ranked sixth in the NL, his walks plus hits per innings pitched ranked second at 0.99, and he finished fifth in NL Cy Young voting.
I looked like a genius for a while when I picked Hamels to win the Cy Young Award in 2011. But when...

Luna Wins it vs Rays; Pierre Contract Picked Up
Juan Pierre is in.Let’s start with the big news: Juan Pierre is on the 40-man roster, officially, according to the Phillies (thanks to the beats down in Clearwater).Pierre being on the club does not preclude Scott Podsenik from being on the roster, as well. Phillies GM Benny Looper told us on 97.3 ESPN FM just minutes ago that both men could be on the team on opening day depending...
So Juan Pierre has made the Phillies
Juan Pierre evokes a lot of strong opinions from people. In an age of statistical data and the prominence of those who interpret that data, Pierre has often been the fodder of conversation. And thus, when he signed a minor league contract before the season with the Philadelphia Phillies, that conversation intensified. Now, he has made the team's opening day roster. Whoo boy....
Hunter Pence New Walk-Up Song
Phillies outfielder wants your help picking a new song to walk to home plate this year.
This year Hunter Pence is looking for a new song, when walking up to the plate. Last year, he came to the plate to the tune of country star Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem”. Pence is looking for something with a little swag but some rock and roll. We selected a few songs that we think...
Phillies Phlashback Phriday- Rader & Luzinski (Sold)
The Philadelphia Phillies we all know and love today are not the same penny-pinching cheap bastards of yesteryear. Ownership used to cut corners whenever and wherever they could. Selling players or trading them for "cash considerations" was common practice. Which leads me to today's flashback...March 30, 1980 - Dave Rader is sent to the Boston Red Sox for a player to...
2012 MLB Team Preview: Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have been a force in Major League Baseball, winning 102 games in 2011.
Over the past five years the Phillies have built a résumé that includes NL East champs five times; 2008 World Series Champs, almost repeating again in 2009; and played in the NLDS the last two seasons.
This ball-club is a perennial favorite and has been...
Juan Pierre is Officially a Phillie
34 year old outfielder Juan Pierre’s contract was picked up by the Phillies today, guaranteeing him a spot on the opening day roster.
The Phillies had to make a decision on Pierre by tomorrow, as Pierre was able to ask for his release if he was not put on the roster.
Juan Pierre gives the Phillies some versatility and some speed off of the bench. Left field could be of particular...

Morneau lifts Twins over Worley, Phillies
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Justin Morneau continued his recent resurgence at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a two-run home run in the Minnesota Twins' 11-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday.
Morneau has spent time at designated hitter the last week, trying to recapture his swing. He's also left the door open for a permanent shift away from first base. It's working...

Luna and Podsednik are vying for a spot. Not the way Vance Worley wants to wind down his spring. It’s been up and down and this last start represents the lowest depths possible.Worley pitched four innings giving up 11 runs, six earned, in the Phillies 11-7 loss to Minnesota. Now, again, how much stock do you put in a spring training game? If you put a lot in what is likely to be...
