Since manager Don Mattingly had a few choice words for his team last week in San Diego, the Los Angeles Dodgers aren't going away quietly. Elian Herrera singled in the go-ahead run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the NL West champion San Francisco Giants on Monday night that kept their postseason hopes alive. ''It's really exciting,'' Herrera said, grinning after his first career walk-off hit and fourth game-winning RBI of the season. ''They are playing so good. They just have to keep playing like that.'' The Dodgers' sixth consecutive victory tied a season high and kept them two games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card. Their win prevented the Cardinals from clinching a playoff berth after St. Louis beat Cincinnati 4-2. The Dodgers and Cardinals each have two games remaining. ''Hopefully the Reds can get out to a good lead and turn it over to their bullpen, which is very strong,'' A.J. Ellis said. Los Angeles' winning streak began after opening a three-game series in San Diego with a 2-1 loss last Tuesday. Mattingly talked to his players in a meeting described by Ellis as ''pretty tough.'' ''He called us on the carpet,'' Ellis said. ''Since then, guys have looked themselves in the mirror stronger.'' Mattingly's message involved having ''players take more accountability,'' the catcher said. ''I'd like to be clinched at this point,'' Mattingly said. ''But the guys have kept fighting. We'll take care of our business and hope for help.'' Hanley Ramirez led off the ninth with a single off Santiago Casilla (7-6), advanced on a sacrifice by Shane Victorino and was held up at third on Luis Cruz's single. Ellis was intentionally walked and Herrera lined an 0-1 pitch off the glove of second baseman Marco Scutaro for the winning run. ''That ball was smoked,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Herrera's liner. ''We were in a tough situation there. Marco made a great effort.'' Brandon League (2-6) got the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. ''The energy has really picked up this week,'' Dodgers starter Aaron Harang said. The Giants tied the game 2-2 in the eighth. Angel Pagan doubled to deep right with one out, and Scutaro singled off Kenley Jansen and took second on the throw. Scutaro extended his hitting streak to a major-league and career-best 18 games. After scoring 18 runs in a three-game sweep of Colorado, the Dodgers' offense stalled. Slugger Matt Kemp went 0 for 4 after hitting homers in his previous two games. Los Angeles rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Andre Ethier hit his 20th homer, a two-run shot, on the first pitch from Matt Cain after Mark Ellis singled to open the inning. San Francisco led 1-0 in the first on Buster Posey's double to deep left field with two outs, scoring Scutaro who had walked. Harang allowed one run and two hits in six innings, struck out three and walked two while facing the Giants for the first time this season. He finished the regular season with his lowest career ERA of 3.61. Cain gave up two runs and four hits in five innings, struck out two and walked one. He is scheduled to start the Giants' playoff opener. ''It was a good overall season, but it's something that I don't want to be sitting on,'' he said. ''I want to have a good bit more starts in the postseason.'' NOTES: Ethier's homer was the first Cain has allowed since Sept. 2 against the Chicago Cubs, a span of 30 1/3 innings. ... Ethier has 20 or more homers for the fourth time in five seasons. ... The Giants had their three-game winning streak at Chavez Ravine snapped. ... Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez hit his career-high 47th double in the sixth, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, tops on the club this season. ... Dodgers officially eliminated from playoff race, baseball season over

Mark Ellis' short fly ball to center field that, at first looked like it had a chance to drop, ended the Dodgers' season tonight. "Drop, drop, drop! Ahh f---!" That's a direct quote from me at the end of the game. Well, it was definitely an interesting season. There's still one more game -- a game that will be inexplicably started by Clayton...

Two out, two to go for the Dodgers

If only the Dodgers didn't wait to, you know, start playing good ball again, we'd be looking at this week differently. But here we are and the Dodgers are two games behind the Cardinals for the last Wild Card spot with two games remaining. The best the Dodgers can do is force a tie with the Cards, resulting in a one-game playoff for the right to have a one-game playoff...

Making Moves: Dodgers/Phillies Complete Shane Victorino Trade

As is expected as the season winds down, there are few, if any, roster moves being made. Teams have already called up players following roster expansion, so most everybody is done for the year in this regard. However, the Dodgers did make one move this past week: The club completed the Shane Victorino trade, sending ...

Trade With Steve Drennen: Picking Up A Matt Kemp Auto Makes For A #BeastMode Day.

I completed my first trade with Steve Drennen who, though he doesn't have a blog, is well known around these here blogging parts. Steve won a contest over at The Snorting Bull, and knowing the teams Steve collects, I thought he might be willing to part with his winnings if the offer struck him just right. It did, thankfully, and I was able to swing a deal for the above Matt Kemp...

Los Angeles Dodgers cold September costs them October

Back in about 1995, a friend of mine who worked for NBC said, “The patient is critical but not dead yet.” His lament was about how cable was eroding the viewership of network television. I suggested maybe it was crappy shows but I digress. The fact is the Dodgers are critical but not quite dead yet. They are still mathematically alive for a postseason slot but have to become...

Carl Crawford Mechanics Analysis For Baseball ProGUESTus Over At Baseball Prospectus

Baseball Prospectus let me write at their site about a topic. I don’t know why, but it’s too late to take back now! Victory! Anyway, it was about Carl Crawford‘s mechanics. I thought it was cool. Go read it: here.

Dodgers chairman exploring AEG bid

The new owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers may not be done acquiring sports franchises. Mark Walter, chairman of the Dodgers and chief executive of Guggenheim Partners, told the LA Times that his company is looking into whether to bid on AEG, which owns the Kings, Lakers and Galaxy. Guggenheim paid $2.15 billion -- a record price for a sports franchise -- in May to buy the Dodgers...

Dodgers ball boy takes a tumble into stands

Your browser does not support iframes. Let's give credit where credit is due. Some ballboys don't take their jobs seriously. Some ballboys won't attempt to go after balls that are clearly out of their reach. The Los Angeles Dodgers ballboy certainly isn't one of those type of guys. This was evidenced during the fourth inning of Monday's Dodgers game against the...

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Josh Beckett earned his first victory in his last five starts and the Los Angeles Dodgers backed him with three homers, beating Colorado 7-1 Sunday for the fifth straight win to stay in contention for an NL wild-card spot. What Does LA Dodgers Furious Finish Mean For Future?

While the 2012 Los Angeles Dodgers’ season looks bleak, a bright light shines at the end of the tunnel: the future of the program. In the aftermath of the Frank McCourt saga, the new ownership made up of Mark Walter of the Guggenheim Partners, Stan Kasten and the great Magic Johnson have ushered in a fresh new environment with high expectations. The record-breaking sale of over...

Will Josh Beckett be remembered as the villain in Boston?

For Red Sox fans, this season cannot end soon enough. Decimated by injuries, plagued by constant turmoil and negative news stories, declines by formerly good pitchers and a manager controversy that never ended all mark a season that started off on the wrong foot and ended without any legs at all. Every bad situation needs a scapegoat. There has to be a villain in a story like this...

Déjà vu: Giants eliminate Dodgers

Posey sends Bums packing Last night, the San Francisco Giants won their 94th game of the year with a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and — like me — Gigantes fans everywhere rejoiced in the fact that the team sent their hated rival packing for the offseason. It’s certainly not the first time these two teams have been involved in eliminating each other from the post-season...

Dodgers playoffs hopes end against the rival Giants, making a final GIFcap as tough as any

Buster Posey started the scoring in the top of second inning with a homer off Chris Capuano. A Luis Cruz RBI groundout knotted the game at one, but Joaquin Arias broke the tie with a homer in the top of the third. Yes, seriously. Joaquin Arias. Marco Scutaro extended their lead in the top of ...

Sign of the times - baseball autographs go hi tech

Jim Nash is such a big Yankees fan that he named his son George Mattingly Nash, combining two of his favorite players: George Herman Ruth and Don Mattingly. So when he noticed Mattingly was participating in a startup venture called Egraphs, which offered an autographed digital picture with a handwritten note and a personalized audio message, he didn't think twice about paying...
