After giving up an error on a straightforward ground ball that led to a Baltimore run in the 10th inning, Aaron Hill hit a tying solo home run in the bottom of the tenth and followed that with a game winning RBI single in the eleventh. The Jays have continued to show resilience this season, this time in the face of a situation that probably would have demoralized them in years prior. The Jays faced their first mini crisis of the season following the Kansas City series. They lost their first series of the season as a result of losing back to back games for the first time as well. For a team that has found ways to scratch out wins in every way possible, the Kansas City series could have been the end of a great opening run to the season. But the character and team spirit were clearly on display as they returned to Toronto and now have come from behind twice to beat the Baltimore Orioles. The bats were alive once again to support another average Halladay outing and a decent major league debut by Jays starter Robert Ray.There have been a flurry of roster moves over the past few days including a couple of surprising ones. Bryan Bullington, who had pitched well over four relief appearances, and David Purcey were sent to AAA Las Vegas. This surprised me because of the mess the starting rotation is in. I was under the impression Purcey was going to be allowed to work through his command issues, but Gaston felt it important that he do this while pitching with the Las Vegas 51's. Another roster move, and this one was obvious, was the demotion of Brian Burres to AAA. Burres had been horrid over his two starts, where he could only muster 6 and a third innings while allowing 10 runs and 12 hits. I was opposed to bringing up Burres in the first place, especially when so much has been made of the young talented starters Brett Cecil and Brad Mills. The Burres promotion turned out to be a disaster for Gaston as he essentially threw away the two games that Burres pitched. In turn, Brett Cecil, Brian Wolfe and Robert Ray, who pitched five and two thirds innings while allowing only three runs today, were called up. The Patchwork Jays rotation now looks like this:Roy HalladayScott Richmond- RookieBrian TalletBrett Cecil-RookieRobert Ray-RookieI am loving all of these Jays wins, but all sense and logic points to the fact that they will not be able to continue winning like they are. Only time will tell...
