Yasmani Grandal's 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy has given Nick Hundley the opportunity to relaunch his catching career. It was Hundley's terrible 2012 that triggered Grandal's sooner-than-expected promotion to the San Diego Padres. Grandal made the most of his chance. However, Grandal tested positive for testosterone during a random test in September, and he will not be eligible to make his 2013 debut until May 28. Grandal's suspension leaves Hundley and John Baker as the Padres' two available catchers with major league experience. "You only get so many shots," Hundley said recently. "This is a big chance for me." Hundley's 2012 season was an across-the-board disaste...

Why Moving the Fences at Petco Makes Sense

Petco Fences 12/1/12 – Photo posted by Tom Garfinkel via twitter The time has finally arrived.  The Padres have seen the light and are moving in the fences for 2013 and beyond.  It’s really a shame that it has taken this long to get to this point, but I give a lot of credit to Josh Bynres and AJ Hinch for making the move. Historically the Padres have done a lot of moves in January and even into February, so it will be interesting to see how things play out. Last year was a bit different as trades...

Daily Friar 12.27.12

There is a large looming question when it comes to the offseason: What do you write about when there is nothing to write about? Most teams don’t have this problem as there is always something going on to make news. In the case of the Padres, there isn’t a whole lot going on. Luckily, all I have been tasked to do is find articles and give them to you all. However, if I just put...

Daily Friar 12.29.12

I am going to take a thought and try and drive down a road and see where it leads, follow along won’t you? Baseball is all about windows. Players have a window of opportunity most of the time, and stats are looked at through a certain window. Think about it, during the regular season you will always here about a player hitting at a certain average during a certain span. It’s...
