Why the hype? Jeurys Familia, SP: Before the season started, Familia was considered one of the top three prospects in the Mets minor league systems. Coming into the season, some people ranked him higher than Matt Harvey and/or Zack Wheeler. As the season comes to an end, he has become a polarizing prospect. With a 96 MPH fastball and a biting slider, no one can argue his stuff is not top notch, but stuff is not as important as results. Those who ranked Familia higher than Harvey and Wheeler probably want a redo because one has to wonder if he is even a Top 5 prospect. Like the expression goes, hindsight is 20/20. Those who ranked Familia as high as they did had reason to. He is only 22 years old and he had a lot of success last year in A and AA ball last year. Between both levels last year, Familia had a 2.90 ERA with 132 Ks and 43 BBs. Many saw him on the same level as Harvey as well because like Harvey all he had to work on in AAA was his command and changeup. Unfortunately f...

MMO Interview: Binghamton Mets Backstop Francisco Pena

After Years In The System Pena Has Risen To The Upper Levels Coming from a baseball family, the theory was always that Francisco Pena would shoot through the Mets system and be their starting catcher by 2012. Although his progress has been slower than what that timetable would have required, there is no question that Pena is moving closer to where he needs to be. Now in his sixth...

Ruben Tejada leads all shortstops in batting average

Photo by Michael G. Baron New York Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada extended his hitting streak to 13 games last night in the teams 13-0 loss to the Marlins.  Tejada finished the game 1-3 and is now batting .362 (21-58) with four runs scored and two RBI during this current stretch.  Sure, former Mets shortstop Jose Reyes had a nice game himself, going 1-3 with a homer and a couple runs...

Oh No, Not Again! Are You Freaking Kidding Me?!?!

The Fix Is In? Remember all the Hater-Ade that gushed out of Mets Nation when Jose Reyes took himself out of his last game of the 2011 season following a bunt single, so that he could preserve his lead in the batting race and win a batting title? Some Mets fans were so turned off and fuming, that they decided to completely forget the other 1,049 games Jose Reyes played as a Met all...

BAYTOON

The Mets refuse to tie the toe tag on Jason Bay. After putting up yet another hitless night for the Mets vs the Braves, Jason has now entered full platoon mode primarily only facing lefties. Mets Blob is sure most fans will be thrilled to see less of the Mets' biggest free agent dog during the dog days of Summer. However, what makes no sense is that Jason is hitting .160 when facing righties

Harvey Too Wild, Offense Too Anemic As Braves Shutout Mets 4-0

Matt Harvey, making his fourth career start for the Mets, was too wild and the Mets offense was shutdown in a 4-0 loss to the Braves at Citi Field. Harvey was plagued by walks tonight, as he allowed five bases on balls. The Mets rookie used his fastball much more than in his last start. Through his first three starts, Harvey threw his fastball 45% of the time, tonight it was...

Mets Continue To Play Poorly In 4-0 Loss To Braves

Atlanta Braves (64-47) @ New York Mets (54-58)

This certainly seems like the absolute last chance for the Mets to make any noise in 2012. Sitting 15 games out of the division, and 9.5 out of the Wild Card race, they take on the leader in that department, the Atlanta Braves at home. It could be a longshot calling this series a decision maker for the Mets, but a sweep for New York would be unbelievably timely. But either way right...

2012 Uniform Change: New York Mets go to 1989

I’m a little backed up here, and I know you all know this is old news but hey, its worth covering again. Last week when the Mets rolled into San Diego, the Padres were rolling back the clock to 1989, and the Mets joined into with their road pullovers with the plain New York script (almost Yankee-esque), and Mets race stripes. In normal MLB, Mets world order, you buy them online...

Braves chase Santana early, rout Mets

NEW YORK (AP) -- Freddie Freeman had five RBIs in the first two innings and the Atlanta Braves battered Johan Santana in his return from the disabled list, routing the sluggish New York Mets 9-3 on Saturday night. Michael Bourn had three hits, Chipper Jones chased Santana with an RBI single in a seven-run second inning and Atlanta sent the two-time Cy Young Award winner to the worst...

Murphy’s Law Part III: R.A. Dickey

R.A. Dickey pitched a 6-1 gem against the Miami Marlins this afternoon. His complete game masterpiece was the 15th victory notch on his belt. He stopped Jose Reyes‘ 26-game hitting streak, which is kind of a conflict for me. As a Mets fan, who wouldn’t want to see Reyes get his comeuppance? I’m not a sentimental idiot though. He was my first round fantasy draft pick. It seemed...

Braves 9, Mets 3

Mets 6, Marlins 1

NEW YORK -- A surprising first half has given way to a disappointing second half for the New York Mets as a whole, but starter R.A. Dickey has regained the form that made him a first-time All-Star. Dickey's complete-game victory over the Marlins helped the Mets halt a nine-game home losing streak Thursday. The 6-1 win gave Dickey (15-3) a share of the major-league lead in wins...
