In the top of the eleventh inning with the go-ahead run 90 feet away, New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis dropped an opposite field RBI single in front of the left fielder giving NY a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish. Of his 13 hits on the season, the single to left was just his second the opposite way. After which, SNY broadcaster Kieth Hernandez said the following:
When was the last time Ike has gone to left field? And that shows me right there he is on his way back. He would not have done that this entire month.”
The single was Ike’s third of the afternoon and fifth over the last three games (5-for-12). With the three-game hitting streak, the 25-year-old slugger has seen his season average rise from .123 to .169 in the process:
Following yesterday afternoon’s win, Davis told reporters that with his slow start it will take some time before his average will be back to normal:

It’s going to be a slow process. You’re not going to wake up tomorrow and I’m going to be hitting .300. It’s going to take every game grinding it out. And hopefully in a couple of weeks my average will be back to normal.”
Due to his early season struggles manager Terry Collins has been forced to move the left hander power hitter are far down as seventh in the lineup; in an effort to get his bat going. Yet, the club is still four games over .500 with relatively no production from #29. I’ve stated before the importance of Ike to the middle of the lineup and hopefully the last three games — and his opposite field game-winning single — are a sign that Davis is ready to turn his season around.
