The Cubs signed outfielder David DeJesus to a two-year deal. Here’s how the move could affect your fantasy team in 2012…

Here’s what I wrote about DeJesus in my free agent primer for The Outside Corner:

2011 was a tough season for DeJesus. He put up career lows in AVG and OBP, but some of his struggles can be explained by a thumb injury for which he needed surgery on in 2010. Despite a down season at the plate, DeJesus continued to perform very well defensively, posting an ultimate zone rating (UZR) of 7.5, mostly playing right field. Despite the down season, there should be a number of teams interested in DeJesus. His .274 BABIP was the lowest of his career and, according to Fangraphs, there was very little change in his batted ball profile. There's a good chance he bounces back in 2012.

Even with his struggles at the pate while in Oakland, DeJesus still boasts a career .284 AVG and .356 OBP. He also moves from the quite spacious and pitcher friendly environment in Oakland to the hitter friendly confines of Wrigley Field. While we shouldn’t expect a big spike in power from DeJesus as a Cub, 15-17 home runs would not surprise me with the outside chance that he runs into a couple more wind aided homers.

Given the lack of on base skills in the current projected Cubs lineup, DeJesus could end up hitting first or second. We’ll have to see how the rest of the offseason pans out, however.

All-in-all, fantasy owners looking for a some cheap value on draft day 2012 should keep DeJesus in mind. He should bounce back and put up a respecatble .285-.295 AVG, .350-plus OBP and 15 or so home runs.
