Found July 30, 2012 on Philliedelphia:
There's a lot of talk about what the Phillies need to get as they sell off pieces over the next 39 hours. Indeed, they look like major sellers after this weekend's dud in Atlanta. National and local media types are listing Shane Victorino, Juan Pierre, Joe Blanton, Ty Wigginton, and Hunter Pence as possibilities. I list my trade deadline hopes here. One thing I keep hearing is that the Phillies must trade for certain needs- maybe that need is a reliever, maybe it's a third baseman, maybe it's an outfielder- you get the idea. I'm going to take a totally different view here. I think the Phillies have two main goals here: Make damn sure they do not go over the luxury tax in a season where they're going nowhere. Get as many good prospects as they can to replenish a depleted minor league system. Now, I know that many fans will dispute this and say they need all major league ready talents. It's important to remember though, they don't have to do a...

A Haphazard Estimate re Victorino, Dodger Left Fielder

As both managing editor Dave Cameron and large swaths of the internet have noted, outfielder Shane Victorino has been traded by the Phillies to the Dodgers. Despite the fact that he’s probably a superior defender to Matt Kemp, it’s unlikely that Victorino will push the incumbent Kemp to left field. (This is what’s known in legal terms as the Derek Jeter Precedent.) It stands...

Phillies Rumors: Lee, Blanton, Pierre

Could Joe go south on I-95? (AP) -The latest on Cliff Lee comes from Buster Olney of ESPN.com, who says Lee is available and the Rangers are pretty much the only team that makes any sense. I’ve seen conflicting reports about Lee going anywhere, but Joel Sherman from the New York Daily News agrees that Lee to the Rangers is a possbility. I still think it’s a long shot that Lee...

Phillies Could Make 2-3 Deals in the Next 44 Hours; Domonic Brown Plays New Position

The 2012 Phillies have brought us plenty of excitement this year, mostly in the form of guest accordion appearances on the television broadcasts.  Unfortunately, the excitement has not come from the team on the field, and now it is time to sell. ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that teams the Phillies have been talking to believe that within the next (now) 44 hours, the Phillies...

Biertempfel: Pirates Unwilling to Part with Top Prospects

Rob Biertempfel reports: The Pirates are reluctant to part with rookie outfielder Starling Marte or top right-handed pitching prospects Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole, which takes them out of the running for outfielder such as Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino and Shin-Soo Choo. I think the Pirates are definitely being smart in not giving up any of these three guys for the people mentioned...

Pregame: Lee vs. Strasburg Closes Out Big Trade Day

A busy day in a dreadful Phillies season finds them shipping Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence out of town. Both moves were very necessary and look for more in the next month as the waiver trade deadline approaches. My brief editorial is the return for Victorino and Pence is worthy of them. I was among the few that felt the haul to land Pence in the first place was ridiculous and...
