Chris Schwinden made his 2012 MLB debut this past Friday.  With <a href=”http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pelfrmi01.shtml”>Mike Pelfrey being shelved for the year… it’s likely to not be Schwinden’s last start with the big ballclub.  The question that Met fans are puzzling is, “Can our team win with this guy on the mound?” The answer is difficult to find.  Schwinden was a 22nd round draft pick in 2008, so it isn’t as if the Mets haven’t already gotten more out of him than fans should expect out of a player drafted from that slot.  He profiles similarly to Dillon Gee, but while I’ve seen reports that his fastball had 1-2 MPH more than Gee’s it looked a little slower in Colorado.  In 4 innings he gave up 7 hits 5 earned runs and didn’t strike out a single batter. Looking at the start: Schwinden was sitting at 90 and topping out at 91 in the game.  His breaking pitches are thrown for strikes but they also don’t have a lot of difference (in speed) from his fastbal

Post Game: Mets Lose Albatross to Rockies 19-8

The New York Mets allowed a total of 4 runs against the Miami Marlins in their sweep of the floundering fish this week. Tonight, the club multiplied that 4-run total by 4 and added 3, just for good measure. The New York Mets (11-9) dropped the series opener against the Colorado Rockies (10-9) 19-8 tonight behind atrocious pitching and a few defensive mishaps. After the Mets jumped...

Pre-Game: New York Mets (11-8) @ Colorado Rockies (9-9)

Coming off of their sweep of the Miami Marlins, the New York Mets will look to steamroll into the mile high city continuing their winning ways. The Mets last visit to Colorado represented a turning point in many ways. Carlos Beltran broke out, Ike Davis' season ended unceremoniously and David Wright's injury continued to plague him. Despite this, the Mets would stride toward...

About last night’s 18-9 loss

The New York Mets (11-9) were absolutely crushed by the Colorado Rockies (10-9) by the score of 18 to 9 at Coors Field in Denver last night. Chris Schwinden, taking Mike Pelfrey’s spot in the rotation, made his first big league start of the season. I don’t mean to be a downer here, but I expected Schwinden to be terrible and he was terrible. In his starts last season with the...

Series Preview: Mets @ Rockies

After another successful home stand, the Mets fly out West to Colorado before heading to Houston. At 11-8, the Mets have to build some momentum on this road trip. The Rockies and Astros both present very winnable matchups for the Mets, and when you consider the Mets will see Arizona-Philadelphia-Miami-Milwaukee-Cincinnati-Toronto. Six teams that many predicted would be in a playoff...

The Loss of Pelfrey Provides Clarity For The Future

Baseball is a cruel business. Having never known another organization, Mike Pelfrey was drafted by the Mets, developed by the Mets, and to some extent excelled with the Mets at the major league level. That all ends today when he has Tommy John surgery. Mike Pelfrey's career with the Mets is essentially over.Although Mike was one of the more frustrating players to watch in recent...

Game Preview: Mets @ Rockies

What a difference a few days make! The Mets were coming off the two worst series of the season so far as they dropped a series in Atlanta and then three of four to the Giants, the Mets fell to .500 for the season. The Mets then swept the Marlins, reestablished a cushion above .500 and are traveling with momentum on their side. It would have been easy for the Mets to fall back this...

Pre-game: Mets (11-8) @ Colorado Rockies (9-9)

After my griping about the Mets return to .500 ball after a 4-0 start, they really put up and shut up in this last three game set against division rival Miami. After a three game sweep of the Marlins, bringing the teams record back up to 11-8, the Mets will go west with a six game road trip ahead of them Before they go to Houston for three games, the Mets will face the Colorado Rockies...

5th Inning debacle over shadows Hairston’s cycle

The New York Mets scored nine runs, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped the series opener to the Colorado Rocies last night: Starting in place of the injured Mike Pelfrey, Chris Swinden allowed six runs — five earned — on seven hits while failing to get out of the fifth inning: “This wasn’t a good way to go out and show myself,” Schwinden told reporters following his...

Down On The Farm: April 29, 2012

Buffalo Bisons (13-10, 2 GB) -The Bisons are one of only five teams in the entire International League with at least 13 wins, unfortunately for them two others are in the same division with league leading Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley. Recently they are winners of their last three straight games and winners of four of their last five. Yesterday they had a walk-off 4-3 victory over...

Chris Young Could Make Pelfrey’s Loss Less Painful

The Mets suffered a huge blow to the starting rotation when it was learned that Mike Pelfrey would be out for the remainder of the season (and a good chunk of next season) due to a partial tear of his UCL (Ulnar Collateral Ligament) in his pitching elbow.  Because of the tear, Pelfrey is now having Tommy John Surgery and will require a full year to recover before beginning rehab...

Poor Big Pelf Heads For Surgery

Mike Pelfrey‘s season is over after just three starts. The 28-year old righty is set to undergo Tommy John Surgery and will miss the rest of the 2012 season. While all injuries are untimely, this one seemed especially so, as Pelfrey was finally starting to show signs of improving and turning the corner. Through three starts — an admittedly minuscule sample — the results were...

Mets Poised To Enter May In Impressive Fashion

The team's extra inning win last night allowed them to match their high water mark of the season, four games over .500. Winning five of their last six, the Mets now find themselves within one game of the division leading Nationals and Braves. At this point, most things are going well for the Metropolitans. Headed into Houston, a team which has posted only an 8-14 record to date...
