Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
Yes, the Mets officially don't have a closer for the remainder of the year and for next year. This will put the pressure on Omar Minaya and the rest of the Front Office to get some thing in place for next year. Now with a new stadium in place, the Mets will not go with internal options. They have a fan base that will not oversee a Aaron Heilman project next year nor a Luis Ayala option.
Ayala has been OK since joining the Mets as the now closer. He has some shaky moments and does not have overpowering stuff. He might be a efficient alternative now, but he might just be a future bullpen arm next year. By the way he is a free agent next year!
Aaron Heilman simply can't get it done in the big spot. Heilman in the last couple of years has been exposed to overusage. He has been relied on to take the bulk of pens setups before Wagner went down. He has always wanted to start, maybe Minaya would trade Heilman and get a arm that can be suitable for closing situations like a Huston Street. That is if Street's injury problems are over. He has been plagued with hip problems that have made his velocity go down and now he has lost his closer job because of it.
Francisco Rodriguez is the main topic of discussion. He is leading the majors with his 55 saves and will break Bobby Thigpen's record of 57 saves this year. That said, he will demand one of the highest salaries in major league history when it comes to closers. The Mets will have Wagner on the books next year for 10.5 Million even though he won't throw a pitch until September (God willing). That means if they pursued K-Rod they would be paying both players a access of 25 million for one year. Will the Wilpons open up the wallet for K-Rod? We will see.......
I would love to get him and obviously if you need a closer , you get the best. He is the best available..........Get him , No Brainer!
The Mets other alternative next year will be Brian Fuentes, who the Mets see as a setup guy more than a closer. The Mets inquired about him but were rebuffed. The Mets will take a look at him and probably will have a better chance of landing him at a reasonable price. Not that it will be cheap, but cheaper than K-Rod.
For now Mets Fans will have to drink plenty during the ninth innings and hope that we make it to the promise land. The Mets have been resilant and made us believe.... Ya Gotta Believe.., Go Mets!
