TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds
It might be a little too early in the season to hype any series as a big one. However, the fact of the matter is that the Pirates will be playing their biggest series in 14 years when they travel to Cincinnati to meet the Reds in a three-game set beginning on Friday night at Great American Ball Park. The Pirates are in second place in the National League Central and trail the Reds by 3 1/2 games. The last time the Pirates played an intradivision series that was this meaningful this late season was Sept. 17-18, 1997, when they hosted Houston in a two-game series at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pirates were 3 1/2 games behind the Astros at the time and split the series, and Houston went on to win the division by six games. Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez (7-9, 3.82) will pitch for the Pirates against Mat Latos (9-3, 4.17) in the series opener on Friday night, while James McDonald (10-5, 3.38) faces Mike Leake (4-7, 4.44) on Saturday night and left-hander Erik Bedard (5-12, 4.83)...

Should Pirates Retaliate for Beaning of McCutchen?
@mbandi Right, because J-Mac buzzing someone is going to make them see the error of their ways. That has a good track record.
— Ed Giles (@InClementeWthr) August 4, 2012
It is an argument that has been had numerous times. Should you retaliate if your opposition drills your best player?
Friday night, Andrew McCutchen faced off against Reds’ closer Aroldis Chapman with two outs...
Minor Moves: Barrett Barnes to the DL, Pirates Sign Erik Turgeon
Catching up on some roster moves that took place yesterday in the farm system:
**2012 compensation pick Barrett Barnes was placed on the 7-day disabled list. No reason was given in the press release, but I’ve learned that he’s out with a lower leg stress related injury. He’ll be out for a few days, and then the Pirates will reevaluate him and determine what type of return to...
Welcome to Pittsburgh Gaby Sanchez and Chad Qualls
Last year's trade deadline all of a sudden looks tame. Neal Huntington went nuts over the past day acquiring pieces to potentially improve the Pittsburgh Pirates. The key word in that statement in potentially. It is no secret what the front office was trying to do. They weren't renting players like they did last year for an ultimately futile run. They made...
Pirates option Daniel McCutchen to Triple-A
The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned pitcher Daniel McCutchen to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for reliever Chad Qualls.
The Pirates announced the move Wednesday.
Pittsburgh is the third team this season for Qualls, who began the year with Philadelphia and was acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees on Tuesday. He is 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA this season.
McCutchen, who was...
Pirates Have Had Great Season, But Only Playoff Berth Can Make Year True Success
On July 25, 2011, the Pittsburgh Pirates' record stood at 53-47, good for a tie for first in the National League Central. Optimism around Pittsburgh was higher than it had been in almost two decades. Even if they didn't make the playoffs, at least the Pirates had a good chance at finishing with the team's first winning record since 1992. But the team faltered badly down...
Fan Ditches Baby to Meet Andrew McCutchen
There's excitement in Pittsburgh for the first time in practically forever for the Pirates and that's thanks in no small part to the blossoming of Andrew McCutchen into a full-blown superstar. How big of a star is McCutchen? Big enough that people are abandoning their children just to get his signature. On Monday McCutchen was at an autograph signing event when he noticed...
Photo: Pirates’ fan leaves baby behind to obtain an autograph
I understand fan devotion more than anyone, and I can understand giving up hours of your day for the chance to meet one of your favorite players from your favorite team. But what happened in Pittsburgh is beyond anything I have seen before. Some Pittsburgh Pirates fan abandoned their baby to get an autograph from [...]
First Pitch: The Most Important Series of the Year?
The Pirates take on the Cincinnati Reds this weekend in what could be the biggest series of the year. The two teams meet two more times this year — in Cincinnati in early September, and in Pittsburgh in late September — but considering the current standings, this is a key weekend for the Pirates to stay in the race.
Cincinnati has a 3.5 game lead over the Pirates. Best case scenario...
Pirates reach 60 wins
The Pirates won the series in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon with an 8-4 victory, building some momentum heading into this weekend’s massive series against the Reds in Cincinnati. The Bucs now have 60 victories–a mark they didn’t reach at all two years ago, and took nearly a month more to reach last season.
Jeff Karstens allowed a solo homer to Starlin Castro in the first inning...
Pirates drop opener to Reds
The Reds found unusual ways to score runs tonight. The Pirates found zero ways to score runs tonight. Wandy Rodriguez had more than a quality start tonight, pitching 7 innings and giving up just 3 runs on 7 hits. After dealing with control issues in his last start, Wandy walked no one tonight and struck [...]
It’s all on the line for the Pirates in Cin City
Tonight’s the night. According to the Trib’s John Grupp, the last time the Pirates played such a meaningful series this late in a season, we were more worried about if Cory and Topanga were finally going to get down to business on TGIF than what the Buccos were going to do on a trip to Cincinnati. The three-game tilt against the Reds that kicks off tonight is definitely...
Friday 8/3 Minor League Roundup
AAA Indianapolis | Indianapolis 2 Scranton/Wilkes Barre 0 This was just the Jeff Locke Show, and we were all intently watching it. Probably DVRing it too. Locke turned it perhaps his best performance of 2012, pitching 7.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out 10. Locke threw 108 pitches, and he might have made it through eight innings unscathed if Kevin...
The Fort, of course
When the Pirates acquired Mike McKenry last June, I was a little bit puzzled. The Pirates really needed a catcher at that point in the season and McKenry seemed like a decent acquisition. He hit for some power in the low minors, though he was old for his levels, and he showed pretty decent patience through his whole minor league career and his defensive reputation was good. I didn...
Indians Hold A Hit-O-Rama
Indianapolis Indians 13, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 1

Daniel Cabrera gave up one run in 6 innings.
The Indianapolis Indians rolled into Frontier Field in Rochester, NY and got the party started. They cracked out 21 hits and 13 runs to overwhelm the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees tonight. Every member of the Indians’ line-up had at least one hit, and CF Jose...
Pirates-Reds Preview
This weekend's three-game series between the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates is probably the most important one between these teams since the 1990 NL championship series.
The Reds have won 13 of 14 to establish baseball's best record as they host the team chasing them in the NL Central - the wild card-leading Pirates - on Friday night.
Cincinnati (64-41) and Pittsburgh...
