David Lennon reports in Newsday, that Josh Thole has worked intensely with Mets catching coordinator Bob Natal this offseason in an effort to prevent a recurrence of the defensive issues that plagued him in 2011. “I’m getting to a point where we’re not in a trial-and-error period anymore,” Thole said. “It is what it is. If I don’t catch well over the course of this year, it will be a matter of who’s next, they’ll keep the line moving, and I can’t have that.” “If things aren’t going well, they’re not just going to keep waiting on you. You have to take the bull by the horns and do it yourself. There’s going to be no ‘he’s young — give him time.’ Those days are over. It’s time to get it done now. I’ve got to keep going forward.” It sounds like Thole understands it’s do or die time and that if he wants to keep his hold on the starting catcher’s job he needs to amp up his performance this season in a big way. Thole’s 16 passed balls last season were the most in t

Would The $70 Million Dollar Mets Be Better?

A few days ago, I laid out the idea that the Mets could potentially continue to lower than payroll over the next few seasons.  Such a trend could see the team flirt with a payroll in the $70 million dollar range heading into the 2014 season.  Today I'm here to tell you that such a team might actually be better than the group the Mets will trot out this season. The fact of the...

Is the Mets’ lineup better than last year’s?

So it seems that a lot of people doubt the Mets this season. However, their pitching staff is pretty much the same with the addition of (when he was healthy) one of the best pitchers in baseball. So with that, I say the pitching staff has improved. They lost a very solid closer in Francisco Rodriguez, but they’ve revamped their bullpen adding the arms of Frank Francisco, Jon...

Mets Release St. Patty’s Day Cap, Jersey

Check out the new cap and jersey the Mets will be wearing on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) when they play the Braves at Digital Domain Park: Simple, but kind of cool.  Poor Keith Hernandez has seen his uniform number handed out to a motley crew of players over the years, but I’m sure he’d have no problem lending his No. 17 to St. Patrick. The cap and jersey look like...

Mets Jambalinka: Ruben Tejada, Matt Harvey, Domingo Tapia

Chris Walendin’s piece on the Mets’ effective payroll got me thinking about the switch from Jose Reyes to Ruben Tejada. There’s a chance that 2011 was Reyes’ career year, only he did it in 586 PA rather than 700+ PA. Reyes accumulated 6.2 fWAR last year. This year, 60 people have registered predictions for Reyes over at FanGraphs. Combined, they project slightly more...

Mets Minor Leaguers Doyle and Moviel Suspended 50 Games For Substance Violation

New York Mets catcher Charles “Dock” Doyle and pitcher Scott Moviel have been suspended 50 games each under baseball’s minor league drug program. Both were penalized Monday for second violations involving a drug of abuse. Doyle, 25, hit .296 with two homers and 11 RBIs last year for the Class A St. Lucie Mets. He was a fifth-round draft pick from Coastal Carolina in 2008 and...

Captain Kirk Hoping To Get Beamed Up In 2012

If you haven’t checked out this article by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, I urge you to take a few minutes to read it – it’s a nice piece on Mets centerfield prospect, Kirk Nieuwenhuis. The talented outfielder with the cool moniker of Captain Kirk, is a package of baseball tools who, just nine months ago, was on the cusp of the Major Leagues, writes DiComo. A lefty-swinging...

Binghamton Losing Their Double-A Baseball Squad

Following 2012, the Binghamton Mets will be but a distant memory, says the Ottawa Citizen. The Double-A club is being purchased by Beacon Sports Capital Partners and will move to Ottawa after calling Binghamton home since 1992. This however, does not mean the Mets would have a minor league baseball in Canada. With their contract expiring with Binghamton after 2012, the squad would...

MMO Fair or Foul: Which Teams Got Better In The NL East

This edition of Fair or Foul features Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog who looks at the NL East and doesn’t buy into the “every other team got better except the Mets” argument. See what you think? The Braves and Phillies did very little to improve their teams, as well. They either traded guys away, signed fill-in role players or re-signed their own guys. The Mets scored more runs...

Let’s take a look at some of the notable dates to circle on your calendar in anticipation of the 2012 Mets season. Mets GM Alderson: 'Big fundraiser' to pay for drive to spring training
