The ongoing and pathetic saga of the Los Angeles Dodgers continues…
Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Dodgers are trying to weasel out of having to pay for Bryan Stow’s claim for damages.
The Stow family, as you may remember, is suing the Dodgers for not supplying adequate security on the night that Bryan was jumped and brutally attacked by a couple of Dodgers fans in the parking lot outside Dodger Stadium on Opening Night last March. A night that the Dodgers also happened to be selling beers at half-price.
The Dodgers say there’s no connection between the lack of security/cheap beer/gang-banger atmosphere at Dodger Stadium and Stow’s beat down.
Say what?
Let me get this straight…
- The franchise has been mismanaged, run into the ground, used as a gimcrack for Jamie McCourt’s extravagant lifestyle, and is now practically bankrupt.
- Decent, literate, family-oriented Dodgers fans refuse to go to the stadium anymore because it’s been overrun by ignorant, uncontrollable and unruly gang bangers like Louis Sanchez and Marvin Norwood, the two losers who have been charged with the assault.
- Armed with this knowledge, the Dodgers’ PR department thought selling Budweiser at a discount was a good idea.
And now, Dodgers owner Frank McCourt says he’s not liable…
Pardon me if I sound a little cynical here, but this appears to be yet another scheme by a greedy McCourt to “buy down his debt” so he can make the maximum profit possible when he finally sells the team, as expected, later this year.
If you’re reading this and you are a Dodgers fan—I mean a real Dodgers fan—you should be absolutely appalled and embarrassed.
I have a few friends who are Dodgers fans. They’re normal, upstanding citizens who would never think of harming another person. Over the years, we have joked with each other about how much we despise each other’s teams. But this is not a joking matter. What’s happening here is utterly disgusting.
If you’re a Dodgers fan, I urge you to boycott your team until McCourt publicly and financially atones for what happened to Mr. Stow. Demand a refund on your season tickets. Call the Dodgers’ ticket sales office (1-323-224-1365) and tell them you won’t go back to see a Dodgers game until McCourt makes reparations to the Stow family. Write a letter to the editor of the LA Times and express your repugnance with the entire situation. Become an Angels fan if you have to.
I don’t say this as a Giants fan gloating over your team’s misfortune. Truly, I don’t. I say this as someone who loves the game of baseball more than the rivalry that has been such a part of our lives as Giants and Dodgers fans. I think you’re with me on that one, right?
McCourt has one shot here to end his tarnished legacy as Dodgers owner with some dignity. But instead of doing the right thing, he’s going for the money grab.
If McCourt can’t show any honor, then maybe you can, Dodgers fans… Beat Boycott LA.
