You won’t like me when I’m angry… Bobby Parnell has been something of a wildcard for the Amazin’s each of the past few seasons. He has been bounced all around the pitching staff,  however in 2012 seems to have found himself a home in the late innings of New York Mets baseball games. The question remains however, which inning does the young fireballer belong? He hasn’t exactly found success as a closer, but has proven to be a very effective set-up man. With Frank Francisco likely starting the year on the disabled list,–and better off staying there–Parnell has been handed the job and has a golden opportunity to prove he deserves to stay there. In his six Spring Training games, he is certainly on the right track, but the question is will Parnell be able to incorporate this exceptional performance into higher leverage situations as the year goes on. The common perception among Met fans is no, Parnell is not a big game pitcher, however if we see this Bobby throughout the 2013 season, we ...

Jordany Valdespin is fighting his way onto the Mets opening day roster

Jordany Valdespin was far from guaranteed a spot on the New York Mets opening day roster, but with his strong Spring campaign continuing through this past weekend, the 25-year-old may very well be on his way to earning just that.  Yesterday the Mets and St. Louis Cardinals were scoreless until the eighth inning, when Valdespin’s single off Edward Mujica plated Travis d’Arnaud...

David Wright is “Captain America” For Team USA and Should be Captain of the Mets

It’s not often that a Yankee will have much praise for a Met and vice versa.  Then again, it’s pretty rare to see a Yankee managing legend coaching a current Mets superstar. That’s exactly what we are getting with this year’s World Baseball Classic with Joe Torre managing Mets third baseman David Wright for team USA.  Wright’s presence in the American clubhouse has been...

Niese Still Hasn’t Allowed A Run, Den Dekker Gloves Another, ‘Spin Homers Then Gets Drilled

The Mets had an absolute field-day this afternoon with an 11-0 romp over against the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland, Fla. Jonathon Niese got the start against Detroit and continues to roll, tossing four and two thirds innings of scoreless ball and allowing just one hit while walking four. Niese has yet to allow a run this Spring. It won’t be long until he ‘s officially tapped as...

Five reasons Jordany Valdespin should make the roster

The team does not have an elite (or even a good) base stealer (David Wright?  Maybe…) without him.  Jordany Valdespin is a threat to swipe a bag and actually seems to have improved his instincts a little so he’s not 100% ability when running. Fielding is a thing you might want.  Let us pretend that Lucas Duda was hitting (Is this late 2011?) now… are the runs he’d bat...

Comparing the 40th and 50th anniversary Mets teams

Last year the Mets had a nice big celebration for the 50th anniversary of the franchise.  This included not one, but two All-Time Team “lists” being generated.  The first being the 50 Greatest Mets in Team History, and the second was an All-Time Team, selected from various candidates by a panel of Met experts (writers, broadcasters, etc). The last time, and the first time really...

Valdespin Competing With Nieuwenhuis For Outfield Spot

VALDESPIN: Decked by Verlander (AP) Jordany Valdespin is not an easy person to like, and especially hard to cheer for. Ask a question and he’ll often mumble an indifferent and inaudible answer. He exudes confidence on the field, but crosses the line with a brash attitude, tendency to showboat and not always hustle. Off the field he wears a bright red baseball cap reading “JV...

Santana celebrates his birthday – but when will he pitch?

Happy Birthday Johan Santana!!! Any chance you’ll be coming back any time soon to pitch for the Mets? They have you penciled in for Opening Day, but Manager Terry Collins appears to be closer and closer every day to using his eraser.   So, what did you do on your birthday, Johan? Pitch in a spring training game? Maybe get some side work in? Run in the outfield with some of...

Niese outpitches Verlander in Mets' win

Jonathon Niese knows he may get the ball on opening day if Johan Santana begins the season on the disabled list. The young left-hander is not taking anything for granted, though. Niese pitched one-hit ball for 4 2-3 innings, and the New York Mets roughed up Justin Verlander in an 11-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Starting the opener at home on April 1 against the...

Jordany Valdespin hit in the groin by Justin Verlander pitch

Apparently, Jordany Valdespin was not wearing a cup when Justin Verlander hit him.  The Detroit Tigers' pitcher lost control of one of his pitches and it sailed inside to Valdespin.  Verlander says he instantly knew where it was going to get Valdespin.  Valdespin had not chance and was hit in the groin. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Valdespin's injury...

Video: David Wright’s grand slam for Team USA

Wright has been absolutely smashing the ball over at the World Baseball Classic, and he really has been “the guy” for USA Baseball. Wright has simply shown that he cares more than anyone else on his team about winning for his country, and I think that is great. Although Wright’s teams haven’t really won anything, outside of the 2006 team, Wright is a “winner” and truly...

Mets Card of the Week: 2013 R.A. Dickey

2013 TOPPS HERITAGE NL PITCHING LEADERS I wasn’t planning to write about the 2013 Topps Heritage set quite yet. I only bought one pack of the stuff on a trip to Target to pick up a roll of packing tape, so I didn’t feel qualified to expound in detail on how it does/doesn’t modernize the spirit of the 1964 issue. There’s a full box in my near future, which will give me the...

Birthdays, Dogs, and Ponies

First off, I hope that Johan Santana had a very happy 34th birthday yesterday. To have been with the Mets for five years and   not have had years taken off his life is a tremendous accomplishment. So congratulations. Johan spent his 34th birthday telling everyone that things are all right between him and the Mets regarding the pitching shape he's in. Wonderful. But of course...
