The Marlins got shut out in three consecutive games after the All-Star Break, but then bounced back by taking three of four from the Rockies. They're not a very good team, but at this point they are a very young team and they will cause problems for the Pirates if the Pirates start looking ahead to the big Cardinal series looming at PNC Park next week. Tonight, Jeff Locke starts for the Pirates and Henderson Alvarez starts for the Marlins. First pitch is at 7:10.

Marlins 2, Pirates 0

The Bucs opened this weekend’s series with a terrible effort at the plate on Friday night, as they fell to the Marlins in a 2-0 shutout loss. Jeff Locke gave the Pirates a good chance to win, only allowed two runs, and struck out a career-high nine batters, but still probably left the game with a bad taste in his mouth. Locke walked six, and two of them in the sixth inning led...

Jake Marisnick, Christian Yelich each hit in home debuts

MIAMI -- Moments after a player gets his first major-league hit, the baseball traditionally gets tossed to the dugout to become a keepsake. Very often, one of the player's teammates then will hurl another ball into the stands as a joke, trying to put a scare into the rookie. Not so Friday night, when Miami's Jake Marisnick singled hard in the sixth inning to snap a career...

Pirates-Marlins Preview

After being forced to wait almost two weeks between starts because of a back injury, Jeff Locke was impressive again his last time out. That could mean bad news for the Miami Marlins, who have won three of four despite inconsistent run production. The Pittsburgh Pirates hope for Locke's fourth win in five starts Friday night when they visit the Marlins. Locke (9-2, 2.11 ERA...

McKenry Has a Career Night at the Plate, But Also Tweaks Knee

Michael McKenry had a big night at the plate, but also tweaked his knee. (Photo by: David Hague) The Pirates had some unlikely heroes step up in tonight’s 7-4 win over the Miami Marlins. The offense was led by Michael McKenry. That’s the same Michael McKenry who Pirates fans have wanted demoted in favor of Tony Sanchez for most of the last two months. It’s the same McKenry...

Harper’s Walkoff Homer Lifts Nationals 9-7 over Pirates

Jordy Mercer, Josh Harrison and Gaby Sanchez collected three each hits in a losing effort. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Thursday’s sweep attempt of the Washington Nationals was one of the wildest games of the season. The Nationals (49-53) walked off winners 9-7 on Bryce Harper’s two-run homer, but that was a mere punctuation on the craziness before. From Mike Winters’ erratic...

No surgery for Jason Grilli, out 4-8 weeks

The Pittsburgh Pirates got some good news from Dr. James Andrews today and that was that their closer Jason Grilli will not need surgery. He’s been officially diagnosed with a strained right flexor tendon which should keep him out for about four to eight weeks, he’ll be reevaluated in 10-14 days. Mark Melancon will take over closing duties while Grilli is out. #Pirates announce...

Game 100 Preview: Pirates at Nationals

Pirates (60-39) at Nationals (48-53) 12:35 PM–Nationals Park, Washington MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates look to sweep away the Nats in today’s getaway day afternoon game. Before the break, the Nats were thought to be the Pirates’ biggest potential contender for the second wild card spot (if the Bucs were to fall off a bit). Now the Nats aren’t even part of that conversation...

Marlins defeat Rockies 5-3, have historic pitching series at Coors Field

In winning three of four including Thursday's 5-3 victory the Marlins became the first opposing team to allow fewer than three earned runs in each game of a four-game set at Coors Field. In the 36th and final inning of their four-game set at Coors Field Thursday the Marlins' offense finally ignited. A four-run inning capped by Donovan Solano's two-run homer propelled...

Rockies' pitching leads way in 2-1 victory over Miami Marlins

The ill-timed slump cut so deeply it even divided the players. They weren't sure how to view this spiral. Troy Tulowitzki spoke of unclenching the fist saying they should play like the ugly guy in the fight — with nothing to lose. Grizzled and bearded Todd Helton labeled it a must-win game. Then again he will be 40 next month and doesn't have a lot of games left. In a...

Why Al Oliver belongs in Baseball’s Hall of Fame

During the past week, I had the opportunity to interview long time MLB OF/1B Al Oliver. Al was a very consistent player over the course of his 18 seasons, hitting .303 for his career, with 2743 hits, 529 2Bs, 219 HRs and 1326 RBIs. He has part of the 1971 World Series Champion Pittsburgh Pirates team as well as NL East Champion Pirates teams in 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1975. He also...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Miami Marlins – Game 101

As Bryce Harper blasted the game winning homer yesterday I was surprised at how okay I was with it.  Not that I wanted the Pirates to lose, but they really had no business winning that game.  It’s extremely hard to sweep a team, especially in four games so that loss didn’t really hurt too bad.…
