Just six weeks ago, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was in the middle of another fantastic season, and was sure to contend for the American League MVP Award. Now, after playing just two games since July 16, Bautista’s 2012 season is over.

Before Toronto’s Tuesday night game against the New York Yankees, Bautista announced that he would have season-ending surgery to stabilize a tendon in his left wrist. The recovery is expected to be three to four months and he should be ready to play before spring training next year.

He originally injured the wrist in an at-bat against the Yankees on July 16. Instead of opting for surgery then, he chose rest and rehab, and returned from the disabled list on Friday. Bautista claims he didn’t feel any pain but could actually feel the tendon moving around. So much so that he needed to be taken out of a game against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Dr. Thomas Graham will perform the operation next week in Cleveland.

Bautista had the following to say about the injury:

“There’s just too much instability in that tendon and it got to the point where risking injuring the tendon was not worth it. That’s why we’re opting to do it now.”

He continued:

“Luckily for me the tendon is completely intact. He just needs to make it stable again.”

Bautista is the two-time defend AL home run champion and was on his way to a third straight title this year. He’ll finish the season hitting .241 with 27 home runs and 65 RBI in just 92 games.

Despite a slow start that saw his average remain below .200 until mid-May, Bautista rebounded. He kept himself solidly in the discussion for best slugger in baseball until the injury.
