Found March 22, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
In Thursday night's Nationals-Braves game, new Atlanta left fielder Justin Upton unloaded on an 86 mph Dan Haren cutter, sending the first pitch he saw in his sixth inning at bat out of the park for a homer. But the fact that Upton homered is only half oft he story. Upton's monstrous homer not only left the yard, but also cleared the scoreboard in left center field at Champion Stadium. It was his fifth homer of the spring, giving the Braves three players with five homers this spring (with Freddie Freeman and Juan Francisco joining Upton). No other team has three players with five, but three have two: the Phillies (Ryan Howard, Domonic Brown), Mariners (Michael Morse, Kendrys Morales), and Astros (Brandon Laird, Jason Castro). Oddly, three of those four teams play their spring games in Florida, when Arizona is typically the offensive hotbed. [follow]

Justin Upton blasts home run over scoreboard in center field (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. Justin Upton is one of the most promising young players in baseball, and the Atlanta Braves are hoping he brings the pop he showed in 2011 over with him to his new team. Upton blasted 31 homers and drove in 88 runs with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011. That total went down a disappointing 17 homers in 2012, but Upton left little doubt on Thursday...

Johnson and Francisco to platoon at third for Braves

getty images It will take two men to fill the void left by Chipper Jones in Atlanta. The Braves plan to move forward with a platoon of Chris Johnson and Juan Francisco at third base. Ideally one of the players would have separated themselves from the other but both played well this spring. “I think both of those guys are playing such great baseball right now,” Gonzalez was quoted...

Simmons' readiness; more Braves thoughts

The slow march toward Opening Day continues. Here are five things to ponder as the Braves check off another week of spring training and more that much closer to April 1. 1. Have we seen enough to believe Andrelton Simmons is ready to bat lead off? The easy answer is yes after seeing the shortstop thrive in the World Baseball Classic as he hit .333 with a 1.016 OPS and scored 10...

Chopcast: Who will be Braves' team MVP?

ATLANTA -- With March comes a national infatuation with brackets. That much is clear. But as the NCAA tournament kicks off, baseball still lurks right around the corner--and the Atlanta Braves' and their explosive offense are tearing up Grapefruit League pitching. So the Chopcast team (Zach Dillard, Jay Clemons and Cory McCartney) thought to combine the two infatuations into...

Player Profile #16: Jason Heyward | OF | ATL

I’ll start off by reminding you that despite the fact that Jason Heyward has played three full major league seasons, he’s still just 23 years old. What he’s accomplished to this point is pretty astounding, and by the time he peaks around age 26-28, he’s going to be a top-10 fantasy player. We’ve all heard [...]

Teheran dominates in split squad win

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- This is how Julio Teheran won a spot in the Atlanta Braves' rotation. The rookie right-hander struck out 10 in six hitless innings and Dan Uggla hit one of three homers for a split-squad of Braves, who beat the Houston Astros 3-2 on Saturday. Teheran, Atlanta's fifth starter, walked three while lowering his ERA to 1.04 in six starts. "That...

Phillies 7, Braves 6

B.J. Upton hit his first long ball of spring training to give Atlanta a late lead, but Darin Ruf connected for game-ending homer with two outs in the ninth inning Friday, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-6 victory over Braves. Upton homered to put Atlanta up 5-4 in the seventh and the Braves added a run on a double-play grounder in the eighth. The Phillies scored twice in...

2013 burning question: Arizona Diamondbacks

Continuing from this morning's season preview of the Diamondbacks... Can the Diamondbacks' new-look outfield effectively replace Chris Young & Justin Upton? This is going to be something to keep an eye on for this Diamondbacks team throughout the entire 2013 campaign. They lost some star power, and quite a bit of power, when they sent Chris Young off to the Oakland...

Mark Reynolds also can hit homers over scoreboards

On Friday, we posted a spectacular video of Justin Upton launching a homer over the scoreboard at Champion Stadium in Orlando. Well, last night in Goodyear, Arizona, Mark Reynolds of the Indians showed the world that he can do it too. In the sixth inning of the Indians-Diamondbacks game on Friday night, Reynolds took a belt-high fastball from Arizona reliever David Hernandez and...

This is my nightmare: Arizona Diamondbacks

In the This Is My Nightmare series, we'll take a look at what the absolute worst case scenario for each team would be in 2013. Think of it as the negative complement to our You May Say I'm A Dreamer series that we'll be running during our preview series. It is one thing for a team to fall short of expectations, but it is quite another to fall short of expectations...
