Found August 20, 2012 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
We knew the Pirates would have to make a flurry of roster moves in advance of tonight’s contest in San Diego…and here they are. Kevin Correia will start the game. He threw two innings yesterday, but volunteered to start tonight anyway (my guess is that he REALLY doesn’t like pitching out of the bullpen, but still, it’s a good teammate move by him to volunteer his arm). He’ll probably be limited to a couple of innings. Remember, he used to pitch for the Padres, and Petco Park is ideal for him. Justin Wilson and Kyle McPherson were both called up from AAA. Both are among Indianapolis’ better pitchers, and both have enough rest to make a start. I would think they’ll be the first ones out of the bullpen in the early innings. Juan Cruz was designated for assignment. Cruz was brilliant to start the year, but was also quite lucky and we’ve seen a good bit of that luck wear off lately. He pitched poorly yesterday, of course, and it’s pretty clear Clint Hurdle doesn’t see him as a late inni...

Kyle McPherson and Justin Wilson to Join the Team; Correia Could Start

I just spoke with Kristy Robinson, who is on the road traveling to West Virginia for minor league coverage. According to her sources, Kyle McPherson and Justin Wilson are both joining the team today in San Diego. Kristy also mentioned that no starter had been announced, but that Kevin Correia could get the start. Correia pitched two innings last night, so he wouldn’t be able to...

Pirates nullify late heroics with bullpen stupidity

The Pirates got some seriously dramatic ninth-inning heroics from Garrett Jones and Andrew McCutchen to avoid another frustrating loss to the Padres. It turns out that they just delayed it, as the Padres walked off in the tenth thanks to a series of maddening decisions by the Bucs. Jones should have been the hero in this one. He hit two game-tying homers in the hardest stadium in...

The Pittsburgh Pirates made the recall of Kyle McPherson and Justin Wilson official. Pirates Prospects learned about their promotion early this morning. In order to make room on the roster, the club designated Juan Cruz for Assignment, and placed infielder Jordy Mercer on paternity leave for the birth of his first child. Top Play: Josh Harrison crashes into the wall

Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Josh Harrison made an excellent catch in the bottom of the 19th inning on Sunday, robbing Tony Cruz of possible extra bases. Harrison secured the catch on the warning track just before crashing into the fence in right field. The first year player from Cincinnati did an excellent job of holding onto the ball after running face-first into the wall....

Game 123 Live Chat: Pirates at Padres

Pittsburgh Pirates Live Game Chat

Game 123: Padres 7 Pirates 5

Here is what I wrote when the Pirates called up Chad Qualls and Dan McCutchen this afternoon:  I get not wanting to throw Morris or Wilson straight into the fire and risk having an untested rookie blow a lead, but keeping guys like Qualls and McCutchen around with Morris and Wilson in the minor leagues is borderline criminal. It will cost the Pirates games in the next two weeks...
