Mets Merized Online:
Newly promoted Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis will platoon with veteran Scott Hairston says Mike Mazzeo of ESPN via twitter. Hairston will start against left handed pitching while Nieuwenhuis will be penciled in against the righties while Andres Torres recovers from his strained calf that he re-injured in the 7th inning of the Mets Opening Day game Thursday.
That creates a short term schedule of Kirk today, Monday and Wednesday, and Hairston filling in Sunday and Tuesday. A pretty even platoon for now, but of course Kirk will get the majority of the time since he’ll face the more-abundant right handed pitching.
This was a smart move by Collins giving Hairston the lefties. He not only has a .815 OPS in his career against southpaws, but also takes some of the pressure off Captain Kirk. Not only mentally, but physically as he is fresh off a season-ending shoulder injury in 2011 and an oblique strain in Spring Training.
Nieuwenhuis will wear number 9 and will bat 8th in today’s matine...

Here’s a profile on Captain Kirk I originally posted in February that will come in handy for those of you looking for some additional infoon the new Mets center fielder. Enjoy!
Let’s go back to the June MLB Amateur Draft from 2008. With their 3rd round pick, the Mets selected a virtually unknown outfielder from Azusa Pacific University named Kirk Nieuwenhuis...
Well, that didn’t take long.
It took only seven innings into the 2012 season for the Mets to suffer the injury bug, as centerfielder Andres Torres strained his calf-the same calf that bothered him all spring-in the seventh inning of Thursday’s opener vs. the Braves. As a result, Torres is now headed to the 15-day DL.
Torres has long been victimized by injuries, so I guess this...
Well, that didn't take long... The plethora of fans who spent the spring calling for Kirk Nieuwenhuis to break camp with the team will get their wish this weekend. Despite an 0 for 2 start at the plate last night he is headed to Flushing to take the place of the injured Andres Torres.Following the news of his injury, it seemed pretty clear that it would be Nieuwenhuis or Double...
There’s a great pic from our new photo services provider of Mets center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis picking up his first major league hit against Atlanta’s Jair Jurrjens. The single was one of two hits for Captain Kirk who was making his major league debut.
“It feels great,” Nieuwenhuis said. “I try to keep it on an even keel as much as possible, but it’s been a little...

The guy most want to see play CF is probably on his way in from Buffalo today. Kirk Nieuwenhuis will be the Mets replacement of Pagan, I mean Torres who hurt his callf yesterday running down a triple in CF in the 7th yesterday. This is according to Mr Rubin.
Kirk is someone the scouts think isnt too durable but he is one of those guys who doesnt mind running through walls. He might platoon a
Andres Torres, who had dealt with a strained left calf for most of spring training, came up lame while chasing a Tyler Pastornicky shot to center in the seventh inning. Torres immediately departed the game, and it looked like he may have re-injured that same left calf.
Scott Hairston took over in center field.
More to come…
The “joke” circulating between reporters, team officials and fans would be that the Mets would have to bubble wrap Andres Torres between games. Barely half a game in his Mets career, he went down with a calf strain, thus prompting and immediate trip to the DL. For all the injury problems the Mets have had in the past 3 years, this may have been one of the quickest decisions made...

With opening night Thursday for the Buffalo Bisons, here is the “official” opening day roster for the Mets AAA entry in the International League. With at least five major league prospects on the roster in Harvey, Familia, Valdespin, Lutz, and Nieuwenhuis, this AAA team is getting away from the image of fielding a team full of retreads every year. Perhaps this incarnation...
