Yesterday, Willie Harris went 1 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.
In the top of the ninth, Harris capped the Mets’ six-run rally by delivering the go-ahead, two out, two strike, two-run single.
Brian Erni: Since his rough start to the 2011 season, Harris has been quietly productive coming off the bench. His .256 average and .361 on-base percentage — along with his solid defense — have given Terry Collins a viable fourth outfield option to turn to, which was the design when Willie was brought into the fold last offseason. Yesterday against Fernando Salas, Harris sat back and reached down to get a pretty nasty two strike breaking ball, driving it into right field to give the Mets the win: an impressive bit of hitting for someone who isn’t getting full-time repetitions.
While it might not be a full-time answer, I don’t think its unreasonable to think Harris could be retained for next season to come off the bench once again. It seems the Mets will once...
