Freddy Galvis.Cliff Lee looks to be ready to rock. He struck out three, giving up three hits over six innings in the Phillies 5-4 win over the Pirates in Clearwater. Lee did not allow a run, but Antonio Bastardo did. He was responsible for three runs just a few days after returning from elbow tightness that was attributed to dehydration. You can stash this in the “It’s Only Spring Training” file, but you’d like to see Bastardo back to the Tony of old, and recently he has not been. There is some cause of concern because the Phillies CANNOT lose him. He, currently, is their only lefty in the pen. And he’s a damn good one that they’ll be relying on – probably too much. So keep an eye on Bastardo.Freddy Galvis is OK after fouling a ball off his foot; he’ll be day-to-day, but no x-ray is necessary, according to some tweets from the beats in Clearwater. This is a bullet dodged, for sure. They can’t have their starting second baseman breaking his foot a week before the season starts. Crisis...

Gump Speaks on Getting Dumped by Phils

If you missed it on the site recently, I’ve been bringing exclusive updates on cuts from Phillies minor league camp. Among the individuals that Philadelphia was parted ways with over the past week or so was outfielder Brian Gump,  a 26th round draft selection in 2009 out of UC Santa Barbara.I had the opportunity to speak with Brian last week and he agreed to allow a glance inside...

Hunter Pence New Walk-Up Song

Phillies outfielder wants your help picking a new song to walk to home plate this year. This year Hunter Pence is looking for a new song, when walking up to the plate. Last year, he came to the plate to the tune of country star Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem”. Pence is looking for something with a little swag but some rock and roll. We selected a few songs that we think...

Cole Hamels Ready to Win 2012 Cy Young Award

Cole Hamels looks ready for a Cy Young season. National League Cy Young winner for 2012 Cole Hamels? Why not? In 2011, his 2.79 earned run average ranked sixth in the NL, his walks plus hits per innings pitched ranked second at 0.99, and he finished fifth in NL Cy Young voting. I looked like a genius for a while when I picked Hamels to win the Cy Young Award in 2011. But when...

2012 MLB Team Preview: Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies logo. The Philadelphia Phillies have been a force in Major League Baseball, winning 102 games in 2011. Over the past five years the Phillies have built a résumé that includes NL East champs five times; 2008 World Series Champs, almost repeating again in 2009; and played in the NLDS the last two seasons. This ball-club is a perennial favorite and has been...

Diekman Cut, Lidge Promoted

CutsThe Phils sent Brian Sanches, Scott Elarton and lefty reliever Jake Diekman down to the farm. The first two guys I could give two shakes about, because I don't follow the FeHams closely and we are unlikely to see them in Philly anytime soon. Diekman, on the other hand, might be back in town sooner rather than later. As meaningless as Spring Training stats are, Diekman still...

Red Sox Shut Down Phillies, 6-0

Although it’s Spring Training, this lack of offense is getting scary. I don’t know if there is something in the water down in Clearwater, but the Phillies just are not hitting the ball very well lately. They put up another donut against the Boston Red Sox on Monday afternoon, being shut down by Jon Lester, 6-0. The Phillies managed just three hits on the day; one from Freddy...

Jonathan Papelbon Clarifies Comments About Boston Fans, Says He Wasn't Trying to Offend Anybody

Jonathan Papelbon caught some heat recently for comments that, according to him, were taken out of context. "The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball," Papelbon told 94WIP's Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team recently. "The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better...

For Phillies, It is Funny How Bullpen Closer Worked Out

If you listen to some accounts, the Phillies were “that close” to signing Ryan Madson to a four year, $44 million dollar contract last fall. Madson denies it, but at the time, there was as much talk of Jonathan Papelbon as their was Ryan Madson, Madson never signed the deal and the Phillies inked Papelbon to a four year, $50 million contract...

Corey Seidman on ESPN Williamsport

Corey Seidman joined 1050 ESPN Radio in Williamsport earlier this week to talk Phillies with host Trevor Turner. They mostly focused on Chase Utley’s injury and its implications on the team, but also delved into Domonic Brown’s prospects for playing this year and Ryan Madson’s unfortunate turn of events.

Papelbon issues weak mea culpa for Red Sox fan comments

Earlier this month former Sox closer and genius Jonathan Papelbon endeared himself to Philadelphia fans by saying they were superior to Boston fans. Today he seems to have satisfied the Boston media by clarifying these comments, but does so in typical not-really-an-apology fashion: “I wasn’t trying to offend nobody, man,” said Papelbon, who signed a 4-year, $50 million deal...

Worley Rocked by Twins, Phils Lose 11-7

Luna and Podsednik are vying for a spot. Not the way Vance Worley wants to wind down his spring. It’s been up and down and this last start represents the lowest depths possible.Worley pitched four innings giving up 11 runs, six earned, in the Phillies 11-7 loss to Minnesota. Now, again, how much stock do you put in a spring training game? If you put a lot in what is likely to be...

Report: Phillies Interested In Yankees Utilityman

According to George A. King III of the New York Post, the Phillies have some interest in Yankees utilityman Ramiro Pena. This is not a huge surprise. Chase Utley announced today that he will miss Opening Day, and the Phillies are looking for some depth behind the young Freddy Galvis.
