Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin says there is a ''50-50'' chance suspended slugger Manny Ramirez will join the team when his 50-game drug ban expires Wednesday.
Ramirez was scheduled to play Monday for Triple-A Sacramento, but the Tuesday plan was yet to be determined. The afternoon start in Minnesota on Wednesday would likely require Ramirez to travel Tuesday rather than squeeze another minor league game in. The A's want Ramirez to get his swing in better shape before he's brought up, but Melvin said Monday his struggling offense might prompt Ramirez's immediate arrival.
The A's reinstated third baseman Brandon Inge from the 15-day disabled list Monday and optioned catcher Anthony Recker to Sacramento. Inge had a strained right groin. Jason Donaldson will be the primary backup to catcher Kurt Suzuki.

Manny Ramirez to begin minor league stint Saturday
Our old pal Manny Ramirez is set to begin a 10 game minor league stint with the Sacramento River Cats, the Oakland A’s AAA minor league affiliate. As everybody knows, Manny was suspended 100 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for a banned substance. He retired, but when he returned to baseball, Major League Baseball reduced his suspension to 50 games. His suspension...
Column: Return of Manny Ramirez is big con
(Eds: With AP Photos.) By TIM DAHLBERG AP Sports Columnist The state of Rhode Island is having trouble collecting some of the millions it lent former pitcher Curt Schilling, another reminder why chasing celebrity is almost always a bad thing.
Schilling met with the state's governor on Wednesday to ask for even more help, after his 38 Studios company missed a $1.1 million payment...
Inge expects to land on disabled list
The Oakland A's are likely to have three of their regulars on the disabled list by the time Thursday's game starts at Texas. After Oakland's 4-1 loss at Rangers Ballpark on Wednesday, Brandon Inge made it clear he believes he will land on the DL because the sore groin that has kept him out of the past four games has not improved. If anything, it felt a little worse...
Billy Beane’s Draft History
Billy Beane’s Draft History
After looking at what the Astros fans could expect in the 2012 Draft from new GM Jeff Luhnow, I decided to look at Billy Beane and his history of drafting college players.
Beane is known for drafting college players and for his tirade in Moneyball for his team taking Jeremy Bonderman in the 2001 draft. The belief is that college players are closer to...
Brandon Inge’s Second Rare Feat
During the 2011 postseason, I wrote about Brandon Inge and the unusual circumstances of his season with the Detroit Tigers. In post entitled Brandon Inge’s Rare Feat, I explained that:
Based on my research, Inge appears to be the only player in the past 10 years with more than five years of major-league service who was designated for assignment, then was recalled by the major-league...

Oakland's Melvin ejected over suicide squeeze call
Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin has been ejected after arguing a call on a suicide squeeze that gave the Texas Rangers the lead.
A's starter Brandon McCarthy thought he caught a bunt from Elvis Andrus in the air and threw to third base for what he figured would be a double play. Instead, home plate umpire Laz Diaz ruled McCarthy trapped the ball, and Craig Gentry was safe...
