Minnesota's Joe Mauer was the only Twin selected to the 2012 All-Star game, and he made the American League roster as a catcher. But Mauer entered Tuesday's game in the top of the eighth inning as a first baseman.Mauer's appearance in Tuesday's 8-0 National League victory was a brief one, as he didn't enter the game until the eighth inning and had just one at-bat as his American League squad was shut out.Defensively, Mauer made the scoop on a low throw by Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler to retire Houston's Jose Altuve for the first out of the eighth inning. That was the only play Mauer was involved that inning, though, as Starlin Castro flew out to center field for the second out and Michael Bourn struck out to end the eighth. Mauer was on the end of all three plays in the ninth inning, as Rays reliever Fernando Rodney induced three ground ball outs.In Mauer's only at-bat of the night, he singled off Arizona left-handed reliever Wade Miley to lead off the ninth inning. Mauer sent a 1-2 pitch from Miley back up the middle for a base hit, the sixth hit of the night for the American League. Mauer was forced out at second base on a ground ball by Elvis Andrus for the first out of the ninth inning, which ended Mauer's brief All-Star appearance.Mauer has played 14 games at first base this season for the Twins, along with 38 at catcher and 23 as designated hitter. Mauer made his first-ever appearance at first base during the 2011 season, in which he also played one game in right field. Minnesota has moved Mauer around the field to help keep him healthy and in the lineup on a regular basis.Tuesday marked Mauer's fifth career All-Star appearance. He played for the AL in the 2006 game and from 2008-10. Including Tuesday's game, Mauer is now 3-for-9 in those five All-Star games. He had one hit each in 2008 and 2009, including a double and an RBI in the 2009 game.Prior to the All-Star break, Mauer was batting .326 with a league-high on-base percentage of .416. He's hit five home runs, driven in 41 runs and drawn 44 walks in 77 games.Mauer and the Twins resume play on Friday when they host the Oakland Athletics for a three-game series at Target Field. Minnesota finished the first half with a 36-49 record, 11 games out of first place in the American League Central.Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.

When the Minnesota Twins used the 20th overall pick of the 2002 MLB draft on Denard Span, a lot of the draft analysts were surprised and felt the Twins had reached for him. For years, that analysis seemed to be spot on as Span continued to struggle offensively in the minors.
It's been a slow climb back from an injury-filled 2011 season for Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau, but he heads into this week's All-Star break on a bit of a high note.
After going 1-for-5 in Sunday's extra-innings loss to Texas, Morneau is now riding a 10-game hitting streak into the break. During that stretch, he has 14 hits, four RBI and a home run. The...
The numbers show that Glen Perkins has been an effective pitcher since moving from the starting rotation and into the bullpen. The Minnesota Twins southpaw knows those numbers as well as anyone, and not just his won-lost record, his ERA and his WHIP. He’s also aware of his BABiP, his FIP and his WAR, as well as most anything that can found in his PITCHf/x data.
Prior to a recent...
Few people in baseball understand the ins and outs of scouting and player development better than Terry Ryan. His expertise in those areas helped turn the Minnesota Twins into a model small-market franchise — six playoff berths from 2002 to 2010 — and it will be needed if the team hopes to revisit its first-division status. He returned to the general manager’s chair in November...
The Minnesota Twins can look forward to major improvements to their Spring Training facility in Fort Myers, Florida. The Twins signed a conditional 30-year lease with Lee County, Florida to remain at the current Hammond Stadium with the conditions that the county was going to make significant upgrades. Lee County was the only county in the State of Florida to apply for...

Every now and then, God flexes his muscle, maybe just to remind wee little men how frail they are. The Texas Ranger and Minnesota Twins needed no instructions to immediately vacate the field. God clapped, they jumped. Enjoy.

With Francisco Liriano heating up, and so few teams branded as definitive sellers as trade-deadline season gets ready to kick into high gear, interest in the lefty figures to pique soon. Earlier today, Ken Rosenthal reported that some teams prefer Liriano as a reliever. While Liriano could work out as a reliever, acquiring him to be one seems like a circuitous route to success.
Over the weekend, a lightning delay during the Texas Rangers/Minnesota Twins baseball game caused play to be stopped for nearly 46 minutes.
It also provided us with this interesting video of players running off the field after hearing thunder and seeing a lightning strike in the fourth inning:

On July 12, 1996, longtime Minnesota Twins star and future Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett announces his retirement due to glaucoma in his right eye. Over a 12-year career, the popular Puckett batted .318 with 207 home runs and 1,085 RBIs. He also helped the Twins to World Championships in 1987 and 1991.

The crippling heat wave has finally broken, and just in time for the All-Star game.
After several weeks of record-setting temperatures from coast to coast, the forecast is for high temperatures in the 90s on Tuesday in Kansas City, the site of the annual Midsummer Classic.
That's quite the reprieve for organizers and civic leaders, along with players, coaches and fans, many...
The Minnesota Twins pull into the All-Star break playing reasonably good baseball and within spitting distance of first-place Chicago in the AL Central, 11 games out with roughly half a season left. The fact that they have rallied from such a deficit in recent memory bolsters confidence of a team digging itself out of a 6-16 April. "We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole,...
