TEAMS: New York Mets
This is a blog about the Mets but today I ask you for a brief break from our favorite team.  This is a personal article, written three years ago.  It’s about baseball – in a way – but I hope it has an even broader appeal.  I promise to write about the Mets tomorrow, when Chris Young and company salvage the final game in the series against the Reds. ***** Most of my childhood was spent in an empty lot across the street from my house. At one time, there were three small houses on that lot but by the time I knew it, the only traces of houses were a few odd bricks that you would come across now and then and broken parts of a sidewalk. My first memories of the lot were the older kids digging a giant hole, which we filled up with all of the garbage. Now this turned a good play place into a great one. What fun it was jumping in the hole with all of the trash in it. Little did I know that the older kids had a vision and that vision was to turn the vacant lot into a ball field. That giant h...

What Are The Odds That Jason Bay Is Still With The Mets In 2013?

The hits just keep on coming for Jason Bay, and not in a good way. Yesterday, Terry Collins spoke to reporters before the game and said, ”I’m really worried about him”. Bay will be seeing a doctor today and the team will learn if he indeed suffered another concussion, his second in two years. When asked about the possibility of Bay missing the rest of the season, Collins...

Do The Mets Need Relief? It May Be Closer Than You Think

Citi Bound? With the Mets obvious need for quality relief pitching, especially in pressure situations, what would you say if I told you there was a guy who could step in and step up, and do a fantastic job for the Mets right now? What if I told you he wouldn’t cost anything, not in salary or in players or compensation, but would merely have to be added to the 40-man ML roster? What...

Mets Farm Report: Peavey Rocked, Mejia Shaky In Relief, Camarena Tosses Gem

Another rough night In Binghamton… Pawtucket 6, Buffalo 1 Sunday was the final game of the four-game set, and the end result was no different from the first three. The Bisons fell 6-1 to the PawSox, drifting eight games behind in the divisional race heading into an 8-game road trip to Norfolk and Durham. Inefficient starting pitching doomed the Herd this weekend, and the case was...

Chris Young solid in third start since shoulder surgery

Right hander Chris Young started for the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon, allowing  just three runs — two earned — on nine hits over seven innings of work, though, he was rewarded with a loss: Photo taken by Michael Baron Young, making his third start since shoulder surgery last year, had another strong outing.  He worked his way in and out of a jam in the third before allowing...

Pigeons join David Wright at third base (Video)

Three pigeons decided to join New York Mets third baseman David Wright in the field during the eighth inning of Sunday's game at Citi Field against the Cincinnati Reds. Your browser does not support iframes. Mets broadcasters seemed to think that the pigeons might be spying on Wright, but in reality they simply seemed to be looking for food, albeit in an unusual place...

Ike Davis taking a turn for the better

By no measure can we say that that Ike Davis is back just yet. I think he’d have to be way north of the interstate to back up that claim. However, not anymore can we say he is a lost cause and that he has to be shuffled off to Buffalo, because it appears that Davis is starting to get locked in at the plate and emerging from his deep slump. Davis is on a six-game hitting streak...

Pre-Game: Cincinnati Reds (36-27) @ New York Mets (35-30)

After a disappointing loss last night, and losing Jason Bay for the 2nd time this season, the Mets and Reds will face off again for game 2 of this weekend series.  The Mets will look to rebound and continue their winning ways from Tampa as they look to tie up the series. Tonight’s pitching matchup features Jon Niese (4-2, 3.69 ERA) and Homer Bailey (4-4, 4.35 ERA).  Niese is...

Mets' Bay hurt yet again, headed for DL

One of the roots of Jason Bay's lack of production in New York is that he has simply been unable to stay healthy. Bay hurt himself again in the second inning of the Mets' 7-3 loss Friday to the Reds, suffering a concussion while tumbling into the left-field wall in an attempt to field Jay Bruce's inside-the-park home run. The Mets indicated that they will place Bay...

The Mets couldn't let fans on the field for REO Speedwagon?

REO Speedwagon played Citi Field following the Mets / Reds game last night. We've seen REO many, many times. The crowd is not throwing bottles and starting brawls. And for the 2-3k who stayed for the... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com

Bruce, Bailey help Reds top Mets 4-1

NEW YORK -- Jon Niese had appeared to right himself quickly in the first inning Saturday night, retiring two of the Cincinnati Reds' toughest hitters after allowing a pair of leadoff singles. The New York Mets starter got ahead of Jay Bruce 0-2, then opted for a curveball. Suddenly, Niese was no longer righting himself or getting ahead, as Bruce smacked the hanging curve...

MMO Flashback: Ron Swoboda, The Heart Of A Lion

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged America. He insisted that by the end of the decade, we put a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. Kennedy’s idea was outlandish and considered completely and utterly impossible. However, on July 21st, 1969, Neil Armstrong set foot on the surface of the moon. Almost equally as impossible was the Mets winning a World Series...

Down On The Farm: June 17, 2012

Buffalo Bisons (37-32, 5 GB) -Despite being five games over .500 the Bisons are still five games out of the division with three teams in front of them. Buffalo is still teetering on that edge of either catching up to the lead back or falling back to their I-90 foes in Rochester and Syracuse who are at least 4 1/2 games behind Buffalo entering today. -The team is in a must-win situation...

Bay injury costly as Mets fall to Reds

NEW YORK -- Jay Bruce's inside-the-park home run got the Cincinnati Reds off to a strong start against the New York Mets, but the play might have cost the Mets more than the first run of their 7-3 loss Friday night. Mets left fielder Jason Bay left the game after the play in the top of the second inning, as he stumbled on the warning track in the left-field corner while chasing...
