The New York Mets continued their attempt to bolster a bullpen that ranked second to last in baseball in earned run average last season by agreeing to a deal with 40-year-old veteran right-hander LaTroy Hawkins. #bbpBox_296873892558041089 a { text-decoration:none; color:#B82B2D; }#bbpBox_296873892558041089 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } @LaTroyHawkins32 has signed a minor league deal with the @mets about 8 hours ago via Twitter for iPhoneReplyRetweetFavorite @Reynolds_Sports Reynolds Sports There was a problem connecting to Twitter. Hawkins put up a 3.64 ERA to go with a 1.38 WHIP and 23:13 K:BB ratio in 42 innings last season with the Angels. He is also, apparently a vegan (in case you wanted to know) with a kick ass nickname according to former Angels teammate C.J. Wilson. There was a problem connecting to Twitter. If you’re like me you might have wondered if this meant the end of the team’s pursuit of Brian Wilson.  The team has brought in several arms on minor league deals and after bringing in Pedro Feliciano, Scott Atchison, and LaTroy Hawkins over the past 10 days things seem to be filling out. Mets prospect news: Flores improving, but where does he fit in?

Flores has always made contact well, but he’s gradually improved his feel for the strike zone and began maturing into his power last year. Although scouts still wonder exactly how many home runs he’ll hit, there’s no question that he’s made real progress. That’s what baseball prospect expert John Sickels had to say about Mets “third baseman” Wilmer Flores this morning...

2013 Topps Baseball Is Kind Of A Bummer For Mets Fans

When I was a kid, there was nothing like the feeling I got when the local candy store busted out the new edition of Topps Baseball Cards. I couldn’t wait to start tearing open those waxpacks, tossing out the gum and desperately start thumbing through them all hoping to find a Met. Five bucks and ten waxpacks later, I’d be lucky if had 5-6 Mets baseball cards – and that included...

This Is How The Mets Bullpen Should Be Made

It was announced yesterday that the Mets signed 40-year old LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league Spring Training. He joins a plethora of veteran relievers to receive the same deal including Tim Byrdak, Aaron Laffey, Pedro Feliciano and most recently Scott Atchison. In recent years, the Amazin’s have tried to fill the gaping hole in the bullpen...

Questions remain for Mets as Super Bowl weekend approaches

I seriously doubt the New York Mets front office has the Super Bowl checked off on their calendar as some sort of deadline for having certain issues handled, but for most fans, focus is likely to shift (if it hasn’t already) as the weekend approaches.  So as the NFL playoffs come to climax this Sunday and we we scurry to check out the Super Bowl 47 odds before determining our...

Mets Officially Anounce Shaun Marcum Deal

The New York Mets today announced that they have signed righthanded pitcher Shaun Marcum to a one-year contract. The deal is worth a guaranteed $4 million dollars with an additional $4 million dollars in incentives according to Ken Rosenthal. Marcum, 31, ranks 16th in winning percentage (.613) among active pitchers with at least 100 career starts. The 6-0, 195-pounder also has 52...

Ricciardi Convinced Marcum To Sign With Mets

Shaun Marcum spoke to beat writers at Citi Field today and revealed that Mets special assistant J.P. Ricciardi was a driving force behind his decision to sign with the Mets. “I know he pushed a little bit. I can’t say how much. But I know he had some say in getting me there,” Marcum said. “And the other thing, for me, was an opportunity to go out and pitch — make 30-plus...

What relievers still available w/ closing exp.

Photo by Michael Baron Yesterday the Mets signed reliever Scott Atchison to a minor league deal and reports indicate that they are not done with the pen, in fact they could even sign someone with closing experience. Frank Francisco is coming off surgery, was injured for a portion of the season and struggled at times with the closing responsibilities. In Alderson's first year...

MMO Featured Post: The Myth Of A Bountiful Inheritance

While I´m quite tired of the “Omar vs. Sandy” debate, a recent post about the “strong farm system” Omar Minaya supposedly left behind in late 2010, got me thinking and looking. To summarize, as of today, it doesn´t look as if the farm system left behind was all that good. And one  big reason for the Mets´ recent and even current struggles is directly related to the lack...

Mets sign OF Byrd to minor league deal

The New York Mets announced Friday that they signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract. Byrd, 35, batted .210 in 47 games with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox last year. He was also suspended 50 games for testing positive for Tamoxifen, a drug that is reportedly used to prevent post-testosterone-cycle crashes. Byrd has 82 home runs and 445 RBI in his 11-year career.

Angels sign Bill Hall to minor league deal

The Angels have agreed to terms with veteran utility player Bill Hall, 33, on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. The right-handed-hitting Hall, who can play third base, shortstop, second base and the outfield, will compete for a reserve spot with the Angels, who watched him work out Tuesday in Phoenix. But he is also open to playing at triple-A Salt Lake...

Omar Vizquel has been hired by the Los Angeles Angels as a roving infield instructor. The 45-year-old Vizquel played for Toronto as a reserve infielder last season, finishing up his 24-year major league career with 2,877 hits. The three-time All-Star won 11 Gold Gloves. Vizquel is interested in eventually becoming a manager. He'll work with the Angels' major leaguers and...

Angels avoid arbitration with Kevin Jepsen

By reaching an agreement with Kevin Jepsen yesterday the Los Angeles Angels officially have no players who will go to an arbitration hearing this year.  This is always a goal for any team's front office and it's an accomplishment to be celebrated.  The team and Jepsen agreed to a $1.181 million deal for one season. Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times confirmed...

Utilizing Your DH Spot For AL-Only

Chances are if you play in AL-Only, you view your DH slot as sort of pesky nuisance, a place to stick that 12th round C/1B/OF/DH player who isn’t particularly good at anything. The DH positional slot, however, can be an enormous boon to your power categories if you select the right sorts of players to rotate in and of these slots. I’m certainly not opposed to an early selection...
