One of the roots of Jason Bay's lack of production in New York is that he has simply been unable to stay healthy.

Bay hurt himself again in the second inning of the Mets' 7-3 loss Friday to the Reds, suffering a concussion while tumbling into the left-field wall in an attempt to field Jay Bruce's inside-the-park home run. The Mets indicated that they will place Bay on the seven-day disabled list before Saturday's game and will activate infielder Justin Turner.

"I'm pretty concerned about it right now," manager Terry Collins said.

The injury is just the latest in a long string of them for Bay, who suffered a concussion when he collided with the outfield wall at Dodger Stadium in July 2010 and missed the rest of the season. Bay began the 2011 season on the DL with an intercostal strain, then missed another six weeks this season because of a fractured left rib -- that one also the result of a diving outfield play.

Each time, Bay hurt himself just when he seemed to be feeling comfortable at the plate. Bay hit his first three home runs in a year during a six-game stretch just before fracturing his rib in April. Upon his return, he suffered through an 0-for-16 slump before hitting another home run Thursday at Tampa Bay.

With Bay sidelined, the Mets will likely turn to a mix of Scott Hairston and Kirk Nieuwenhuis in left field, with Andres Torres receiving extra reps in center.

"It didn't look good at all," Hairston said of Bay. "That was really unfortunate for it to happen again. Hopefully it's not anything serious."
