The New York Mets were closing in on a deal with right-hander Brandon Lyon on Sunday, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com. Lyon would become the latest in a flurry of late signings to bolster the team's bullpen. The Mets also recently have added veteran right-handers Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins and left-hander Pedro Feliciano to minor league contracts. Lyon, 33, went a combined 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 67 relief appearances last season with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays.

2013 Mets Projections: Ike Davis, 1B

Ike Davis‘ 2012 season can be summed up in just one word: inconsistent. Fans had high hopes for Davis, who many thought could rise to stardom last year. Two months in, however, people started to question whether Davis should even be on the team, as his batting average struggled to even approach .200. Later in the season, Davis picked up the production, and his batting average gradually...

Spring Training ’13: Darin Gorski Will Get Long Look As Reliever

Darin Gorski, Binghamton Mets (photograph by MMO) On Monday, general manager Sandy Alderson talked a little bit about Mets left-handed pitching prospect Darin Gorski. Alderson said that Gorski will get a serious look as a reliever in Spring Training, but it is unlikely he’ll make the Opening Day roster. The Mets just want to see how Gorski performs in that role. Gorski, 25, has...

Wright Reaches Out To Michael Bourn, Things Could Be Heating Up

David Wright  told The NY Post yesterday, that he has spoken with and exchanged texts with free-agent center fielder Michael Bourn in an attempt to lure him to Citi Field. “I just wanted to let him know that he would be a great addition here and he’d obviously be welcomed here,’’ Wright said after his first early workout at the Mets’ spring training complex. “I talked...

Is Jose Valverde worth the risk for the Mets?

The Mets lack a reliable reliever, and although they have some younger talent who could potentially fill the void, virtually everyone in the bullpen is a question mark. Over the weekend, rumors arose that the Mets were thinking about pursuing the flamboyant closer, Jose Valverde. The Mets do desperately need an arm in the bullpen to add some depth, and to replace their current closer...

Mets Minors: Ratings by the numbers Luis Mateo and the Fantastic 15

Round three continues to get more and more interesting.  We start to get a mix of high performers and high expectations.  The good news for Met fans is that I’ve yet to hit a single name that I would discount (Were I playing a video game) as a lost cause. Luis Mateo – OVR: 64 PEAK: 94 (Age 23) What This Means: Mateo’s stats in SSA were broken, that’s how good they were...

Russ Canzler and why it is worth it for the Mets to take a chance on

OF/1B Russ Canzler was designated for assignment for the forth time this offseason, this time by the New York Yankees. What separates Canzler from, lets say Nick Evans, is the fact that he never clears waivers, explaining how he has gone from Cleveland to Toronto, back to Cleveland to the Yankees, all since last season ended. Last year, Chris Schwinden went on a similar path, being...

The Clock Has Started Ticking On The Sandy Experiment

Pundits often say a college football coach deserves at least two years to turn a team over before anyone can honestly pass judgement.  That time provides the new coach with enough time to recruit his own players and implement his own scheme.  General managers in Major League Baseball get no such grace period.  Thus the dilemma Sandy Alderson currently finds himself in. Since taking...

Bullpen Idol – The Mets search for a closer

The way things are going…Mr. Met might be the closer. Frank Francisco‘s time as Mets closer looks like it’s coming to an end. As per mlb.com, Alderson has made “no secret” that he would like...
