2008 TOPPS SILK CARLOS DELGADO The first baseball-player silks were distributed by tobacco companies in the early part of the 20th century. Those early issues (catalogued as S74 and S81, for those of you scoring at home) were actually satin, not silk, and were intended to be sewn into pillow covers and the like. So after a long day of child-laboring and dodging cholera, little Jenny could rest her weary head on the face of Fred Snodgrass, and get a good 4 hours of sleep… Topps reintroduced silks in their 2007 Turkey Red set, and brought them back again in 2008, creating mini reproductions of cards from the regular set in fabric form. They dropped these into sturdy plastic frames for safe keeping, and serial numbered them out of 50. There’s a small rectangular window cut out on the front, so that you can touch the “silk” itself. I’ve run my pointer finger over Carlos Delgado numerous times now, and all I can tell you for sure is that he’s smooth. Silky smooth… Related Posts:Mets cl...

Lucas Duda Optioned To Triple-A Buffalo

As expected, the Mets have announced that they have optioned Lucas Duda to Triple-A Buffalo. Duda was batting .241/.335/.391 in in 89 games with a dozen home runs and 44 RBI. Duda drew 42 walks and struck out 94 times in 307 at-bats this season, almost a third of the time. The big guy was mired in a horrendous slump in July that forced Terry Collins to start using other options...

Zack Wheeler Has Second Straight Bad Outing

Mets top prospect Zack Wheeler was shelled for ten hits and six runs (five earned) in four innings today in Binghamton where the B-Mets were hosting the New Britain Rock Cats. For Wheeler it was his second straight bad outing. On July 20, the right-hander was lit up for eight earned runs in 3.2 innings by Bowie, having allowed six hits and three walks. It was rumored yesterday that...

Malaise Setting In As Listless Mets Fall To Nationals 5-2

Oh no, not another Joe D. game recap… Embrace the horror my friends. Nothing we do now will change anything. The time to strike was when the Mets were winning and they needed a general manager who could sustain that glorious run when the Mets never spent a day under ,500 and staked a solid claim on the National League Wild Card. You snooze, you lose. Sandman fell asleep at the...

Miley, D-backs start four-game series vs. Mets

The New York Mets were initially reluctant to promote their first-round draft pick from two years ago, but desperation is setting in. The free-falling Mets are calling up highly touted Matt Harvey, hoping that in his major league debut the right-hander can help the team to its first victory in seven contests Thursday night in the opener of a four-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks...

Mets downplay Harvey's arrival

The future arrived at Citi Field on Monday, eager to begin his New York Mets career. But before losing an 8-2, 10-inning game to the Nationals at Citi Field, the Mets spent most of their breath cautioning fans not to expect too much out of top prospect Matt Harvey right away. "We've tried to make an effort to temper expectations, in part because we can't, nor...

NEW YORK METS & CFDA TEAM UP ON A RANGE OF FAN GEAR

To celebrate both of their 50th Anniversaries, the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) has teamed up with the New York Mets to create a special range of limited-edition merchandise. Designers and CFDA members Billy Reid, Yigal Azrouël, Rogan Gregory for Loomstate and Scott Haan and Jeff Halmos for Shipley Halmos developed the new Mets fan fashions. The Mets x CFDA collection...

Losing My Harmony And My Mind

I thought I was prepared for Thursday's game. I purposely used aromatherapy shampoo before the game to relieve stress and promote harmony in my psyche (and my scalp). And for the most part, it worked. It was a very workmanlike, stress free performance by Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals from where I was sitting in left-center field. No ninth inning meltdowns, no dropped pop...

I Would Ask “How Much Worse Can It Get”, But I’m Too Afraid of the Answer

Look, I’m aware that the Nationals are a very good team with excellent pitching, but ONE GAME isn’t too much to ask is it? Stephen Strausburg looked dominant today in the Nationals 5-2 win over the Mets, their second consecutive 5-2 victory over the Mets.  In a nod to consistency, this is the third straight game against the Nationals that the Mets have scored two runs.  At...

Gio, Nats, make Mr. Met cry...

Nationals 5, Mets 2: Ho-hum, just another series win for the Nats. Gio Gonzalez makes up for last time out against R.A. Dickey, dominates Mets. Sorry, Mr. Met. Gio's line: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 87 pitches, 53 strikes. Oh deer! Adam LaRoche hits a bomb into the upper deck. Video here. Bryce Harper: 0-4, 3 K vs. Dickey...
