In a interview with Marc Carig of NY Newsday, Mets GM Sandy Alderson Claimed The State of the New York Mets is "Incomplete" at this point of the off-season... Alderson said the Mets are pursuing "a number of things.'' He added, "To say that we've been patient is probably an understatement. But that's what we've been.'' That patience could translate into bargains for the Mets, who have cast a wide net in their search for a back-end starting pitcher. But waiting out the market comes with some risk, namely that they ultimately come away without any upgrades. Alderson said he is "uneasy'' about the state of the bullpen and that the outfield could use "an upgrade at virtually every one of those positions.'' Alderson said Former Giants Closer Brian Wilson has "a ways to go'' to bounce back from Tommy John surgery. Considering where he is with rehab, Alderson said he liked what he saw from t...

It’s A Make Or Break Season For Duda

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Lucas Duda’s surgically repair wrist is healthy, and he will head to Port St. Lucie next week to join Dave Hudgens for early workouts, a Duda is a work in progress and with no improvements expected in the outfield, the Mets are making him one of the top projects in Spring Training with Hudgens expected to work extensively with Duda...

Getting to know Collin McHugh, rotational darkhorse

Every day the Mets move closer to starting the 2013 with only four rotational givens: Santana, Niese, Harvey and Gee.  That leaves Mejia, Familia, Schwinden, Hefner and a certain fella named McHugh.  You might be asking, “McWho?” but by the end of Spring Training I would hardly be surprised if Collin McHugh were to be anointed as the 5th starter in the rotation. The reason...

Juan Centeno is among nine NRIs for the Mets

Every spring, players across all of Major League Baseball fight for a spot on a big league squad.  Some of these players have a high salary; others are top prospects and than there are the guys who just need a job. The latter usually come in the form of non-roster invites that have a higher chance of spending the 2013 season in the minors for clubs such as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre...

Which Prospects Will Debut In 2013?

Wheeler is the odds-on favorite to debut in 2013, but there are plenty others to keep an eye on. So which prospects can we expect to see debut for the Mets this season? Will we see another dazzling Harvey-esque type debut to instill some hope for the future? This is a good question and one that will be more fun to tackle than all the questions about the major league squad. 2:1 Odds...

Mets, Parnell avoid arbitration with $1.7M deal

Relief pitcher Bobby Parnell and the New York Mets have avoided salary arbitration, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $1.7 million. The deal was completed Thursday. Parnell has been a key member of New York's bullpen the past few years. He led the team with 74 appearances last season, going 5-4 with a 2.49 ERA and seven saves. The hard-throwing righty had 61 strikeouts...

MMO Fair or Foul: The Hair Of The Dog That Bit The Mets

I totally loved digging into the first half of this reaction post by Bill Price of the Daily News, after learning that the Mets balked at Scott Hairston’s two year contract demand. Just who the heck does Scott Hairston think he is? According to reports, he has the nerve of asking the Mets for a 2-year, $8 million contract? If my math is right, that’s $4 million a year. Who...

New York Mets and Bobby Parnell agree to one-year deal

Mets Have $95M Payroll And Only $5 Million To Spend? Not Exactly…

Just caught a glimpse of this on MetsBlog: So, as we’ve been discussing all winter, the Mets payroll is around the same number as it was last year, but without adding new talent to the roster (and reducing their payroll commitments by parting ways with Jon Rauch, Mike Pelfrey, Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez). Now, Sandy Alderson has indicated he would be able to expand the budget...

Mets have Dice K and Brandon Webb on their radar

The New York Mets continue to scour the free agent market for veteran pitchers who will accept minor league contracts while looking to rebuild their value.  A Chris Young reunion is always an option and guys like Shaun Marcum and Joe Saunders also remain on the teams radar. #bbpBox_291922452517376002 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_291922452517376002 a:hover {...

Daisuke Matsuzaka Talking With Mets

MetsBlog passes along that former Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka told Hochi Shimbun that he is now talking with the Mets, Indians and Marlins, though other teams have expressed interest in signing him this winter. Dice-K prefers to sign a big-league contract with incentives. However, it is also likely he ends up signing a minor-league deal or could return to pitch in Japan...

How Sandy Alderson has leveraged the offseason for the Mets

While the Wipons are leveraged to the hilt, this offseason has been a textbook case about how a team and a general manager use leverage (or have it used against them.) While TNT canceled the TV show “Leverage,” that word is still being used more today than I’m guessing any of us would have imagined just five years ago. So, what is leverage? The dictionary definition is as...

Mets Don’t Fear The Beard, Haven’t Closed Door On Wilson

Updated On Jan. 17 by Joe D. From Marc Carig of Newsday, the latest on The Beard: Source: Mets still haven’t closed the door on a major league deal for former Giants closer Brian Wilson. Fear the Beard Rumors! Updated On Jan. 16 by Joe D. This from Mike Puma of the NY Post: Brian Wilson probably shouldn’t change his ring tone to “Meet the Mets” anytime soon. According...

Update: The New York Mets Love Creampies

New rule: when somebody asks you a question on Twitter, run every word of it through the Urban Dictionary. Otherwise, you’re like the New York Mets, stuck talking about how awesome it is when people creampie you. Quick, somebody try to convince them that “cuckold” is an old-timey term for being “scrappy.” (h/t to Media Rantz)- Follow us on Twitter @withleather - Follow...
