SOLID… Solid as a rock… According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Sandy Alderson thinks the coaching staff has done a solid job this season. “I think the coaching staff has done a solid job,” Alderson said, adding that he and manager Terry Collins will discuss the coaches within the next 7-10 days. “Obviously we haven’t gotten the production out of the bullpen we would have liked, but I am not sure that is related to any coach. But Dan has done a nice job over the last couple of years and I do believe he has developed a rapport with many of the pitchers.” That could bode well for pitching coach Dan Warthen, Puma adds, who is the last holdover on the staff from former manager Jerry Manuel’s regime and has been a question mark to return in recent seasons. Alderson told the Post that he will discuss the coaches with Terry Collins in the next week to 10 days. Accountability… Does that word mean anything around here? I can’t believe Warthen or Hudgens don’y have their heads on the ch

Ike Davis’ quest for 30 HR, Harvey’s big stick, pitchers set record

Due to their ballpark and personnel, the Mets have never been a big HR hitting team. Only 28 times in team history has a player reached the 30-HR mark in a year. By contrast, the Rockies have had a 30-HR season 32 times in their history and they have played 31 fewer seasons. Ike Davis has hit 26 HR this season, which is tied for 40th place in franchise history. Others to hit...

Hey, Mets! Lock up David Wright long-term already!

There is no other way to sugarcoat it. The Mets appear to be stringing along the end of the season. While it was nice for the Mets to actually score some runs and play spoiler on Friday night by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3, the Mets are once again headed towards a losing season defined by another stumble to end the season. The Mets are now 4-8 in September. Aside from R.A...

Wally Backman Talks About Matt Harvey, Says He’s Never Seen Him Pitch Like This Before

Here’s a clip from SNY of Kevin Burkhardt interviewing Wally Backman who is now part of the Mets coaching staff since the minor league season ended. The subject is Mets rookie Matt Harvey who Backman says he’s never seen him pitch like this when he was at Triple-A Buffalo, and he wonders if Harvey was just bored in the minors and probably not going full tilt. Have a look and...

Thoughts on the Garrioch Mets prospect list

My good buddy, Matt Garrioch of MLB Prospect Guide and Minor League Ball, comes out every year with his top prospect list and we both go professionally head to head with each other (it has been professional, right Matt J) over what he was smoking when he came up with some of these names. Of course, both of us are just applying opinions here, which, as the old saying goes… Matt...

Mets Shut Out By Brew Crew, Lose 3-0

Recap: In just the third start of Wily Peralta’s young career, the Mets were completely baffled and continued to struggle offensively as they dropped this one to the Brewers 3-0. Chris Young got the nod for Amazin’s and put together a solid effort, despite allowing home runs to both Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez in the fourth and a second bomb to the reigning NL MVP in the sixth...

Pre-Game: New York Mets (66-79) at Milwaukee Brewers (73-72)

This afternoon at Miller Park, the Mets will try to actually win a series.  Last night, the Mets scored some runs again, but it wasn’t enough as Jenry Mejia couldn’t find the plate and blew a 4-1 lead. Ike Davis hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th inning, but it wasn’t enough at the Mets fell to the Brewers 9-6.  Chris Young (4-7 4.39 ERA) will be starting for the Mets...

Mets vs. Brewers Series Preview

Mets fans are just hoping this season ends as soon as possible. It’s been another lost year in New York, but maybe, just maybe, the team will be able to get at least one win in their series against Milwaukee this weekend. New York has lost six in a row, putting their record at a miserable 65-78 for the season. They were just swept consecutively by the Atlanta Braves and Washington...

Angel Pagan Has A Higher WAR Than All Of The Mets Outfielders Combined In 2012

Angel Pagan is the #3 ranked free agent outfielder this offseason. Could any of you have ever imagined this? Me doing a post gathering data from Fangraphs and even using WAR to illustrate the point of this post? Who says you can’t teach an old dog a new trick… Anyway, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around all these wholesale changes that are apparently coming this offseason...

Mets vs. Brewers pitching preview

The Brewers are threatening to make it into the wildcard, and their playoff hopes are still alive. The Mets are standing in their way, and a three games series with the Mets will be basically a win or go home scenario. Milwaukee sits just 3 games back of the wildcard spot, after being 12 ½ games back of that same wildcard spot just about a month ago. MLB odds are favoring the Brewers...

Expanded rosters lead to more crappy LOOGY decisions from Terry Collins

Terry Collins has 17 pitchers to choose from and it only seemed like he used every one of them Saturday night, when he trotted eight different pitchers out to the mound in a game where the Brewers batted eight times. Some of this was unavoidable, as Jenrry Mejia did not record an out in the fourth inning. But some of it was more of Collins’ platoon advantage masturbation, which...

Game Preview: Brewers @ Mets

The Mets try to forget about this past homestand and their problems at home as they hit the road again, this time to face the Brewers. Jon Niese gets the start for the Mets and he is 10-9 this season over 27 games and 171.0 innings of work while posting an ERA of 3.47. In his last seven games he has pitched 47.1 innings while posting an ERA of 2.47. The last time he faced the Brewers...

Game Preview: Mets @ Brewers

The Mets and Brewers play the rubber game of the series this afternoon as Chris Young makes the start against Wily Peralta. Young is 4-7 on the season over 17 starts over 96.1 innings with a 4.39 ERA. In his last two starts he has pitched 11.0 innings and has allowed only 3 ER while striking out 10 batters. The last time he faced the Brewers was in 2008 and he pitched a complete...
